FYI - banks are responsible for fraudulent transactions and not the customer. If someone steals money using your cards then the bank is the victim. That's why they're very careful with it, because they have to pay for it.

Pay for things with your credit card in the mean time, pay the balance off in full when you get your statement and you won't pay any interest anyway.

Finally, don't put a recurring transaction on a debit or credit card, it only leads to trouble in the long run. Insist on a Direct Debit, because you've much more protection that way.
 
Had this happen with Barclays recently... bought a laptop from OcUK (who I use regularly for all sorts of value purchases big and small) only to have it "rejected by card issuer", phoned up the bank and got "theres no fraud flag on your account, your available funds are good, etc. etc. we've manually cleared the transaction so you should be good to order again", checked with OcUK who said the card issuer were the ones who were denying the transaction. Tried putting the order through again, same result, got the automated message from barclays this time listing the last 5 transactions... yada yada barclays kept telling me there was no fraud flags on my account despite getting automated messages from them telling me just that. Got back again to OcUK and the customer service person at OcUK tried to put the order through manually and that went through.

Makes you want to use cash - tho Barclays anti-fraud is usually pretty good but seemed to go into complete meltdown that time.

Had this with Nationwide this morning, phoned number on back of card, few security checks, card unblocked a minute or so later. If your bank can't do that then you need to find one that's more competent.

Also, they gave me £25 compensation the other day. So, that was nice.

Then I'm guessing you haven't hit their 4 online purchases in one day limit before they block your card due to suspected fraud.

It happened to me once and now I'm seriously careful that I don't hit that wall again since it takes a few days to remove the block (and I wasn't even called even though they had my number at the time).
 
They done the same to me a few years ago, repeatedly blocked over the course of a few months when I was in the army and abroad often which I suppose is just them safeguarding. Still happened though months later after explaining to them my situation being in the Army. Left them for Halifax and never looked back, great bank they are.
 
I've only ever had this when I've visited a strip club... I reckon they must get a high number of married douche bags telling the bank that they didn't make the transaction once they've sobered up, realised they've blown £500 in there and the wife is going to kill them.
 
I had this when i was over here on holiday, RBS blocked my card because i used it in Burnley, then Heathrow then New York and then at Hampton.

Phoned them up and it was working again in 5 mins.
 
OP they actually "Killed" the card? They have not done that to me yet. They just put a "Block" on it which they can remove

Yep, they've killed the card completely, it's not something they can reverse, so I'll have to wait for the replacement card to arrive. In the meantime, I'll have to go into branch tomorrow (where I'll make my displeasure well known to the manager) and withdraw enough cash to last me for the week.

It's a ludicrous situation I find myself in, they called me, I confirmed my identity and then they asked me to verify whether I'd made several transactions over the past several days. One at a branch of ASDA, another at a B&Q and a third at a petrol station. All were for about the £30 mark and I could quite clearly verify it was me that made them as I still have the bloody receipts in my wallet and could confirm the exact amounts, dates & times! Then they asked about an attempted transaction this morning, that again I could vouch for trying to make myself, but I was told that they're killing my card anyway as they think it's fraudulent as that's their rather farcical policy, despite my protestations that nothing untowards happening, except me now being massively inconvenienced.
 
You should definitely ask for compensation for the massive inconvenience. Ask to make an official compliants and make sure you get the names of the persons you talked to.
 
I've had this happen a number of times with Halifax and Barclaycard. What is odd in your case is that after saying you made the transactions that they would still keep your card suspended. Last place you would want that happening is abroad... Switch banks.
 
I've had this too. You can have the security disabled at your request to prevent future embarrassing incidents. Mine was on Xmas eve at Sainsbury's with a massive queue behind when my card was declined, out comes the supervisor or manager and hands me a telephone where I have to explain myself in front of everyone.

I can see the benefits of this high security, especially if it is an out of ordinary spending but a supermarket I shop at most weeks???
 
Went into branch today and spoke to the manager, apparently it would seem that my debit card number was found on a list being circulated amongst fraudsters that had been intercepted by the Police. I'm fine with them cancelling my card under these circumstances, but why couldn't they have just told me this over the phone at the time or when I subsequently phoned back? They should have done according to the manager, so they'll be feeding that back to the fraud department for future cases.

Ah well, **** happens.
