HSBC rant - Unbelievable!

In practical terms what you want to do (pay in a large amount of change) isn't a frequent requirement for the bank. Perhaps 1 in every 200 people who visit a branch (at best) will want to do it. The bank has to focus on providing the best service possible at reasonable cost to it's stakeholders and given the low demand, providing the ability for you to pay your change in on a saturday isn't worth the cost (which after all is represented as a lower interest rate on your deposit or a higher rate on your overdraft). However they do provide still provide you the ability to do it, at slight inconvenience, which is really the best you can expect.

That isn't what annoyed me though. Up until recently I could use by local branch on a Saturday, but now I can't. So, I made the effort to find another branch which could help. According to HSBCs website, the Richmond branch DOES have a counter service on a Saturday - hence why I went there. I made the effort to check this before I went, they couldn't be bothered to make sure the website info was correct.

In that case you'd better close all your accounts as all banks do it, it's just that not all of them actively promote as much.

I obviously meant the closing down of branches that everyone can visit for personal service in favour of opening "elite" branches that only the richer clients can visit and speak to staff.

I have about £1500 in change, half of it is counted and the other half is still in my giant Coke bottle...not looking forward to taking that lot to the bank.

No branch of HSBC has Saturday counter service and the website just says the branch is open.

Maybe their site is just inconsistent. I have always found it (at least in the past) to state if the counter service is not open. Hence why the opening times for Kingston Eden St are:

Open: 0900 (Tue 0930) - 1700 (Thur 1900, Counter 1700)
(Sat.): 0900 - 1700

or Kingston Clarence Street:

Open: 0900 (Tue 0930) - 1700 (1900 Thurs)(1700 Counter closes)
(Sat.): 0900 (No Counters) - 1700 (no Counters)

Compared to Richmond which is:

Open: 0900 (Tue 0930) - 1700
(Sat.): 1000 - 1400

off topic but where are these renovated HSBC branches? I haven't seen these machines in any of the branches I visit (Moorgate, Bank & St Pauls tend to be my regular ones) but would love to take down my change and get it counted!

And another thing, I really hope HSBC don't introduce them RSA/SecurID things/handheld calcs where they convert your bank number into a hashcode to access online banking.
The Barclays ones look like Fisher Price calculators.

RBS/Natwest do it with Coutts, they just chose to give the network a different name where as HSBC kept their name on the branches and set them up outside of London.

There is further re-branding coming as well, though I don't believe there are further Premier branches planned. I only know of 1 or 2 branches that are purely premier and 90%+ of the customers are Premier and thus expect to have a better service. Most big branches have a premier area and the refurb programme is on-going throught the network at the moment. Machinery roll-out is also on-going as is the project with BT to provide cash points/phone box combos in remote areas. 500 planned iirc.

The branch in Bracknell (my local branch) has the new machines in it, though I must admit I haven't seen the coin machine. The machines for putting in cheques is very useful and simple, used it a dozen times and have had no problems at all :)

I agree that its a bit off that there is no service at all for paying in money, but why have you got that much odd change? Don't use just use the change for odd small purchases? I never have any more than about £15 change at any one time.

Also, doesn't one of those coin machines at supermakets donate some of the money to charity? I'd be willing to use it if I had £30-40 of change.

Hmm. Looks like I have have been wrong and will have to eat some humble pie. There is this statement on the website (which I managed miss, even though it is fairly clear):

Note: There is no counter service available at our branches on a Saturday. Alternative facilities such as ATMs and deposit machines are available.

Would have been handy if this open branch had a deposit machine which took coinage though. Ho Hum.

all I know is the coinstar is a rip off taking 8% for any reason is bad I prefer to count my coins and go to my branch if they one day decide not to take more thn 5 bags. Then I will complain. I hate how poor banks service is they should be open as long as all retail stores. If I have to work till 10 then why not banks?

So what about the post office? I find it inconsiderate of them working 9-5 and only the main PO in our town (100k people...) is open on a saturday and even then only til 12.30.

DO you have any idea of the security issues a proper bank has to cope with? This is an industry where getting a gun pointed at you is something that happens. You can't just 'open' up, it takes much more than that. Then there are data protection issues so you have to literally lock everything up at night, every slip of paper that could possibly have someone's details on. There are alarms to consider and I for one don't like coming out in the dark. Some of our branches do open late one night per week anyway but they tend to be in busy city centre locations.

I personally thing banks shouldnt close early, or open late, they should be open from like 6 until around 10 everyday, they save so much money on staffing due to their silly hours...

My bank annoy me at times. Im also with HSBC, they seem to be pretty good a lot of the time, they have have messed me around a few times lately, i asked for a Maestro card, they said its on its way, next thing i know im waiting a month or so, so i gave them a call..

They said that i am unelegible. So i thought stuff it, i then, had to ring for another issue and i asked how i become elegible for one, they then, without saying anything about elegibility, said that i was elegible and it they were sending it again.

So, another month passes, i ring again and they then said it wasnt possible to get one :S Which really annoyed me, so i gave up completely.

Well, some time passed and i then asked, one more time, how the hell i become elegible, they then said i was elegible and it was on its way, they then, after a little rant from me, gave me my elegibility details which i was quite clearly elegible, on numerous occasions, turns out that the advisors who have been talking to me before didnt check the right information or something, and had passed me to the rong departments, muppets.

Anyway, it arrived the other day, i was assured my pin would be the same on my new card, but guess what, went to draw out some dosh yesterday afternoon and my number didnt work and gave me one more chance, at which i thought i cba watching it swollow my card.. So i used my other which lucky enough hadnt been cancelled, idiots.

Kind of annoyed me a little, as you could understand, but its about time to change my pin anyway, had this one for years.

Anyway, theres my misshaps with this bank.

James.
