***HTC Magic Thread***

How are you getting this new ROM? Mine says none found even though the updater is set to get all ROM's + Experimental ones.

Go there, and yeah to upgrade from 4.x to 5.x you need to do a wipe, so boot into recovery (I updated to Amon Ra's 1.7 just in case), do a nandroid backup, then a wipe, then apply the 5.0.7 rom and gapps update that he's posted on his forum

Then reboot, wait for ages looking at a vodafone screen hoping and praying, then go 'oooh, pretty' at the new loading screen, etc etc :p

I tried the new ROM again last night, Market works fine now and I figured out why it was running so sluggishly on my phone, apparently Tasker doesn't like running from the SD card, so I swapped it over to internal memory and now it's all nice and smooth. I did the same with all the apps I found that weren't working with the new ROM and they started working too, so I'm pleased. It's not quite like having a new phone, but it's a great deal nicer to use. I wish they'd included the in-built alarm app though, I don't really like any of the ones on the Market, they all seem to be bloated with unneccesary features.

I applied the 5.0.7 ROM but its absolutely eating my battery for fun.

Unplug the device from power fully charged before I leave work at 17:30 and by 07:00 the following morning I'm down to 10% battery!

Its a real shame as the ROM runs absolutely fine (apart from LED notifications not working when phone screen is off).

One thing that was mentioned on the forums was to go into Spare Parts and the bit which determines what the red/hang-up button does, select "do nothing" and then reselect go to sleep or whatever the option is,

When I opened it up earlier (around 7 ish iirc) I was at 51% battery (since ~5:45am) and nothing was selected, did the above and just checked now and the battery is still at 51%, could just be coincidence though but worth trying...

How are people getting on with these cyanogen 5.x mods?

I am being a bit of a girl and weary of switching from my nice and stable 4.x to a less stable 5.x.

Any experiences would be much appreciated!

moved over to 5.08 on friday and upto now is running really nice. Massive fan of 2.1 eclair - massive improvement. Its a little slow when going back to my home screen sometimes (ie. 3-4 secs) but other than that is excellent. Had it since friday night and no crashes upto now

Hmm... not so keen on this slowness idea. I always found the magic was a little slow until the latest mods came in so am weary of switching to a slower version!

You cant really expect lightning fast performance on a magic imo, its essentially very old hardware with pretty brand new software (designed for faster phones) running on it.

Did you go from 5.0.7 to 5.0.8?

Hey guys, I've got a strange problem.

Out of no where, my Magic keeps trying to use WAP. It's really annoying because every 10 seconds or so, I get an error message and it interrupts whatever I'm doing on the phone. Maybe I managed to change something whilst it was in my pocket?

Is there a setting or should I reset my phone?

Nope, went from 4.2.x
Massive difference

Ah cool, I wasn't sure if the performance hit was going from 5.0.7 to 5.0.8
Yeah, it's a little slower than 4.2.x but with a few tweaks the difference isn't that big.
Have you selected to keep Launcher in memory in the settings?
That seemed to make a good difference on mine.

I'll give that a go, cheers bud!
Massive improvement though from 1.6 > 2.1. Android really just gets better every release!

So I follow the instructions below?

INSTRUCTIONS:
- First time flashing CM-5?
1. Root your device and install Clockwork Recovery (ROM Manager on the market) or Amon_RA's recovery (Dream / Magic)
2. Do a Nandroid backup!
3. Install the DangerSPL if you don't already have it
4. WIPE (I cannot guarantee an upgrade from CM-4.2 to CM-5 will work)
5. Install the ROM
6. Optionally install the Google Addon if you want Google Applications like Gmail and Market

and not the
- Upgrading?
1. Do a Nandroid Backup!
2. Install the ROM (your Google apps will be backed up and restored automatically)
instructions?

So I start from step 2 of the first set of instructions as I've already rooted my Magic and have Amon_RA's recovery?

Seems that 5.0.8 is a beta/test build so I'll just install 5.0.7. :)

I don't think you need the Danger SPL on the Magic (I didn't bother with it at least and mine works fine, I think he mentions it further up the release post...)

Also I upgraded to 1.7.0 Amon_RA just to make 100% sure.

But yeah, wipe, install rom and install the gapps.zip (I did mine all in one go), boot up, wait ages praying you haven't bricked it, and eventually enjoy 2.1 :)

Oh, and as mentioned tick the 'keep home in memory' bit, I use a swap as well, and the most important bit is you need LauncherPro in your life. :p

Ah yes. I see it now. I won't bother with Danger SPL then but I'll do the Amon RA update. Got a link for that? :p

Don't worry. Found it. Going to use the G version.
