HTC Vive

Anyone tried Half Life 2 on it yet? Back on the DK2 it was the only game to really give me much motion sickness, and even then not that extreme. On the Vive I get almost none. Really fun to play, but I hope they can implement the controller soon.

Hold up! I can play Half-life 2 on my Vive? Are you freaking kidding me!? Why aren’t Valve promoting this!?

It feels like that episode of Family Guy where Quagmire discovers internet p0rn (Youtube it!). ;)

As said motion sickness is possible and Valve have said they don't want to promote anything that could put people off.

That said I didn't suffer much at all on my Vive. Until you're used to it I do recommend putting the movement speed down a bit, should help.

yes it is

With reference to Phones connected to 3.5mm jack on HMD while using Display port to feed Vive box.

Thanks for that, I thought display port was just that ie Display, no audio.

That will save me faffing with USB or wireless headphones.

edit Have just been reading up on DisplayPort specs, sound channels (optional), so as long as enabled on graphics card the sound should work fine.

Under playback devices with my current card GTX770 I have 4 Nvidia High Definition Audio lines, only one plugged in HDMI to my AV Amp, Display port having a line I now understand but the other two connectors are DVI.

Got the Vive a week or so ago, had to work but set it up

Set up was easy, scotch taped base stations to the top of bookshelves, quick and dirty but safe and stable

Room setup is 2.5m x 2.3m, pretty good

Played a bunch of games, testing out things, very immersive and huge potential

Best games: gf likes audiomachine, I find music games ok but not my thing

I liked Budget Cuts the most, and then some of the more RPG/atmosphere heavy experiences, absolutely love Brookhaven even though it's just so short

Now I want more games and more complex games, with proper story/mechanics/immersion/longevity

dvi-d carries audio too ;)

I was looking into this but im reading so so many issues with it, software, a lot of people with dodgy controllers apparently that need replacing (buttons/triggers), seems to be its suffering from '1st gen tech' problems, will sit this one out until gen 2 I think once they have learned from it.

I'm in the same position and I'm rather indecisive. I think I'll now end up waiting for either gen 2 or a price drop when hopefully there will be a collection of complete games.

At present most of the games look quite fun but come across as looking more like demos than finished products.

Even with potentially one dodgy controller, is it still worth it? 100% yes for me, you know how when you watch the videos of the Vive they make it look absolutely amazing but you think a lot of that it just hype and marketing? It's even better than I thought it would be. It's hard to explain without trying it yourself - definitely see if you can try it out somewhere first, maybe some people won't like it but it's probably the bets toy I've ever bought.

Also going to try lowering refresh rate and a few other fixes to see if that works on the controller before I send it back. Definitely some teething issues alright (like HTC software conflicts) but it is saved by Valve who's work is evident throughout, thankfully.

Yeah maybe others have issues, I had none really

Set up the whole thing in 10 mins, I did cut corners though

I have bookshelves so I just taped the base stations to the top of bookshelves

It's fine, works perfectly

The rest is literally plugging the computer into a little box on one end, and the Vive headset into the other end (including headphones)

That's it really, just start games from steam VR either on screen or inside the headset

You can even answer skype / steam messages while in the headset and read email on virtual desktop

Not going to link my phone though, no idea what that will do

One thing though

I want more games!

Not elite dangerous etc though - I just want to play Skyrim, GTA, etc in VR

Surely this can't be so hard to do, and I'd rather just do it through official steam support than with software like VorpX

You generally only really hear the troubles, most people don't say it works great. I have one as does my mate, both work fine.

Heavily addicted to that archery game in The Lab :)

I think the issue with FPS games is the movement. Traditional "push forward to move forward" controls lead some people to get motion sickness as their head is moved around without their normal bodily input.

On saying that, I'm working on a roller coaster VR game atm and just got it working moving you around on the roller coaster and I didn't feel too nauseous, but I've never been that prone to motion sickness.
