Hi Guys,

I'd like to run Plex at home, I wanted to run it on my QNAP NAS, but unfortunatley it is too old (ARM chip) to transcode.

I looked into upgrading but my wallet shrivelled up and ran for cover.

So I'm thinking about building something for less than £300.

Aside from my budget, I'm also looking for as quiet as possible and low power consumption.

Here's what I've come up with (no HDD, I have a spare):

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus H87I-Plus Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £88.99
1 x Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £82.99
1 x Cubitek Mini Center Mini-ITX Case - Black £37.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020058-UK) £37.99
1 x Corsair Value 4GB (2X2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMV4GX3M2A1333C9) £35.99
Total : £293.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Questions:
  • Does that CPU come with a fan? Is it quiet?
  • The case does not come with a fan, do I need one or will CPU cooler be enough?
  • Have I made any configuration/compatability mistakes? (I've not done this for a while)

Thanks,
KB.

How Many Hdd's have you got?

If I was to go with a HTPC setup personally I would be looking at something along these lines:

YOUR BASKET
1 x ASRock B85M-ITX Intel B85 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ITX Motherboard £62.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 130 RC-130-KKN1 Mini ITX Case - Black £45.95
1 x Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £41.99
1 x Kingston 60GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/60G) £39.95
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020058-UK) £37.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Fury Black 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Single Channel Kit (HX316C10FB/4) £29.99
1 x Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan - 4 Pin PWM £7.99
Total : £276.44 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Low power consumption, Onboard Graphics should be fine for HTPC Work, The case can fit a standard graphics card if needed down the line. SSD for the OS, also extra fan for case.

EDIT - The Processor should come with a standard CPU Heatsink in a Retail Box if not you could look at getting a low profile one.

Thanks for your help!

I like that case, but it will be a tight fit...

Is there anyway to know if that listed height (205mm) includes those (fairly large) feet?
