Huge Let Downs

Quakewars is definatley one, for all the hype they got about it being a bf2 killer and them pimping the fact it had no distance fog it was pretty laughable.

They had no distance fog so you could see further...BUT units would just pop into view, whereas in bf2 you had distance fog covering the units and they would appear when you got close enough.

Essentially both games had a different approach to distances presented in the game but really the same outcome, but splashdamage presented quake wars like you could see distant battles ongoing across the maps etc. Really as far as viewdistance was concerned it was worse than bf2 because units would just popup in front of your eyes.

Had a very similar experience with Ultima Ascension. I practically grew up with the Ultima series, starting with 3. Ascension was just such an unadulterated betrayal of the whole Ultima universe , it was utter garbage.
I was on the other side, I'd never played any of the Ultima games before and I thought it was quite good. I've learned much since then :).

Test Drive Unlimited is probably the biggest letdown for me recently, I still really like the idea of a MOOR game but they completely screwed up the multiplayer and can't be bothered to fix it.

Bioshock, whilst still a good game, I can't really see how it got GotY. Crysis as well, whilst it looked awesome and I didn't seem to experience the lack of performance people complain about, but it was essentially just another fps underneath.

Recent games that have surprised me however would be CoD4 and TF2.. Both of these I went into without judgment and both blew me away in terms of gameplay and graphics.

Two clear contenders as far as I'm concerned:

Deus Ex "2"
Rainbow 6 "Lock Down"

The names alone pain me, but at least Rainbow sorted itself out somewhat by handing back development to Ubisoft Montreal.

Knights of the Old Republic 2.....Greatest let down of all time considering how awesome the first one was.

It could've been great, that's the sad thing about it. I knew that KOTOR 2 hadn't been finished properly before I bought it, but I didn't realise just what a bodge job the last quarter of the game actually was. It's at times like that when you understand the utter contempt us gamers are sometimes regarded with by the big publishers. :(

For me the biggest let down was Rome: Total War. It actually marked a watershed in computer gaming for me. I'm now a much less enthusiastic gamer and my tastes are far more conservative. I'm also much more cynical of the industry as a whole.

Possibly a slight overreaction to one PC game. ;) But for me that was going to be the game.

Not sure if it fits here, but I've been let down by PC gaming in general. I've been trying to find a good PC game I can get into for ages but I just can't find one. I've ended up going back to a game I've already completed on the 360: Oblivion (but with tonnes of mods)

HL2 series are the only PC games I've enjoyed. :(

Maybe I'm just trying the wrong games.

I definately agree with you that it could have been great, it's a real shame as KOTOR is one of my all time favourite games and when I played the sequel I almost screamed out in frustration with the half finished story lines.
Ah well lets just hope the new one is going to be finished properly!

Oh add Need for speed Pro street into crappy games too.

I agree, words could not describe how upset I was with the released product. If you read up on the development cycle its not too suprising as the game was pretty much restarted 3 times before it reached its final form. I think I remember reading that after the success of UO, Ascension was put on hold for over a year... It never really recovered after that.

Its a shame that EA owns the rights to some of the franchises that pioneered PC ganing, Wing Commander and Ultima to name a couple. I doubt they will ever be brought back unfortunately.

Lots of people not liking S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I played it about a month ago for the first time and thought it was fantastic, gripping story, great gun mechanics, really well paced and very atmospheric.

Nevewinter Nights II.

Gorgeous character & environment graphics, but... hideous inventory graphics, clunky modelling, irritating cut scenes, aggravating character voices, nonsensical party system, and a criminally outdated "area-based" environment (unlike DS II or WoW, which has a true 3D environment).

Having played and loved all three of the original NWN series, I was hopelessly let down by NWN II. They had the opportunity to fix all the silly things from NWN, but chose to keep them in and add a few more.

Bioshock for me. I was looking forward to a rebirth of the old style games, with a good story, ended up being really crap with shiney looking enemies, only a few different types too.
