Hugh's Chicken Run

At the end of the day it's all a load of ******** hypocrisy anyway. I don't see what difference it makes if a chicken gets to wander about a field or gets stuffed in a cage and mutilated, the end result is the same.

But the end result is not the same at all. There is a huge difference in taste, texture and fat deposits.

No, I'm all for eating free chicken. Where can I get free chicken from?

It just amazes me how some people think they are better than others because they eat an animal that had a reasonably happy life before being slaughtered and butchered, compared to one that was abused and mistreated. At the end of the day your eating something whose sole purpose in life was to be killed and eaten, so there really is no moral high ground.

Surely its better to give an Animal a decent life before killing it ?

It also tastes better.

EDIT- I see,, So now you want to punch me in the face aswell ?

Why? What good does it do to us (except for the quality benefits, but the differences are quickly converging as technology moves forward)?

It might taste better to us, but at the end of the day it's still a dead chicken whose only reason for being born was to be killed. That's what I mean when I say the end is the same, you end up with a dead animal that had no reason for existing except being dead.

This is the internets, everybody over-exaggerates on the internets. A punch in the face on the internets equates to a tut and roll of the eyes in the real world. If I'd said I wanted to track down and kill you with nuclear fire or a rusty spoon, then I would really want to punch you in the face if I met you. You have to be able to read between the lines and recognize the keyboard talking sometimes.:D

I love this continual display of the "Doesn't affect me so why should I care" attitude that exists in modern society.

Perhaps you should go for better animal welfare for no other reason than it's the right thing to do?

I eat a lot of meat and buy it all from the farmers gate for the vast majority. The only things we can't get are generally dairy products - but for that we go to a local farmers co-op shop.

In regards to the cost - we buy far too much food per person as it is. Buy a little less, buy better quality and far less goes to waste.

Recently bought a organic free range chicken - cost me £16. (big bird about 3.5 - 4 kilos). For one meal I used one breast and did a chicken and bacon salad. (Fed 4 of us - 2 adults and 2 kids). Second meal I used another breast and did a stir fry - again fed 4 of us. Then did a stew/hot pot with the legs, thighs and wings - fed all of us. Finally used all the bones and carcass to make a huge pot of stock which has already made one pot of soup and there is enough left for at least another huge pot. So thats 5 meals out of one bird - works out to be a little over £3 per meal. Oh and by the way the wastage was virtually zero - only the bones were left once all the goodness had been boiled out of them.

And for those going on about the cost and then buy KFC / Mcdonalds etc - do you have any idea how much chicken (good quality) you can get for a single meal in these places?

I';ve tried free range chicken and normal chicken, and the best i've ever tasted
(home cooked) is one that was simply labelled corn fed

i assume this would be battery but it tasted far better than the organic free range.

Corn Fed is the Maize they are fattened up with, I seem to remember " Corn Fed " appearing on the screen under the Freedom Foods chickens,

Which are the ones that get the nicer sheds to live in.

I've also never seen a Battery caged chicken on a supermarket shelf before, Completely different shape with not as much meat on.

I live on a Dairy Farm ok, We rear cows to give Milk at the end of their lives some of them go on a Government Scheme for meat, Sometimes we rear cattle for the freezer.

Now the cattle we rear for the freezer are treated in the best way possible to give them a happy life, I realy can't understand why you think something should be treated horribly just because its going to die sometime soon.

EDIT - We also treat the Dairy Cattle nicely :p

Lol... what happened to:

Hahaha excellent, it just shows what **** some people speak. :D

I did a late Sainsburys shop this afternoon and there was loads of normal chicken left on the shelves but not one single bit of free range. Even the eggs they had nearly totally run out of free range.

I wonder how long it will last.

Depends on whether people want nice tasting food or not.

Free range eggs are soo much nicer - brighter yolk and generally a lot tastier.

Free range meat is a lot tenderer and packs a lot more flavour.

Hopefully once they realise how chicken and eggs are meant to taste the change will be for the long run.

Oh I agree totally, I love decent eggs! I hope you're right and maybe with more demand free range goods will come down in price, although maybe all chicken will go up in price as there won't be enough space currently to cope with all this extra demand?

I buy free range for the taste, I get everything from my local butcher as well, the fact the animals are well looked after is just an added bonus ;)

No you don't. You are just spent a substantial amount of time making a post to moan about it. Oh right? You were being sarcastic? At least its not just me.

It's right because the birds are not cramped? Interesting.

Yay for you. It's as if buying it straight from the farmers makes the quality of the animals' lives better.

Your family or a collective "we"? I buy just the right amount and I buy it cheap. Where do I fit in?

I hear greenpeace have vacancies. My family just got 3 meals out of a small battery chicken (I am the only one who exclusively likes breast ;)) - sorry, I am exclusive and only eat breast (sarcasm again, is anyone seeing it yet?). It was about £3 for the whole chicken. Yay for me now?

And for those going on about the cost and then buy KFC / Mcdonalds etc - do you have any idea how much chicken (good quality) you can get for a single meal in these places?

Do you know how many PCs you can build for the cost of an Alienware? Do you care? It comes down to supply and demand.

And the classic comeback when someone gets owned on OcUK :p

Started getting all my meat from the butcher now, costs about £30-40 and that lasts me a good 4-5 weeks I reckon. Tastes great and bigger portions than the supermarket rubbish too. The chicken breasts are huge as are the sausages so can get by with 2 sausages per meal instead of three supermarket and the chicken breast tends to last two meals.

"Owned"...."Cool".

Do you go once every 4-5 weeks?

I never eat battery if I can help it. The thought of me putting a chicken in my mouth that has spent all those weeks couped up with chickens crammed in a barn just disgusts me, I wouldn't want to step in there, let alone eat them!
