HUKD is trash now

Because the deals rejected are sometimes better offers, nothing good comes from removing fair competition.
What a strange attitude. People will stop bothering to post deals if they feel like they are being shut down and ignored. That will lead to a worse experience for everyone. If 4/10 deals I posted were shut down for no good reason I would very quickly stop bothering to post any of them. The people who post them don't get a kickback, they are doing it to help people.
I assume this is another 'source: my personal experience' type post :p any examples of what I'm missing out on, or is this conjecture?

What do you mean "what am I missing out on"? Any community that relies on a large number of people to crowdsource information will suffer if community members stop engaging in content creation. Its not a tricky concept that needs an in depth peer reviewed journal to prove.

Well the whole thread is people moaning the deals aren't as good as they used to be but I am not convinced. I wondered if you were onto anything and there was a thread discussing it.

Affiliate links, smaller retailers being overlooked, superusers posting more expensive deals from affiliates - I can't say I've really been impacted by this. As you rightly pointed out, it is a community that crowdsources information but if the deals aren't there to be had in the first instance, you can't vilify HUKD and its members.

Edit: The frontpage right now for example is 10% off a 6 grand Corsa. If you aren't in the market for a car, it doesn't make it a crap deal. There is a switch game for 35 quid which has been established to be a decent price for a switch game. So on and so on.

I have just been using HUKD for god knows how long. Probably 10+ years, maybe more. The big difference now is that people post deals that are crap far more often (deals that are 2% off a £50 item) and there are simply so many people that you have to be constantly checking the site to actually benefit from most of the good ones as they will expire within minutes sometimes.

Unknown unknowns my friend. If you never know something was there, how can you miss it. I have just seen enough comments from people complaining that they posted the exact same deal a few hours earlier and it was rejected.

Oh there are still plenty of good deals on there but the overall quality has dropped. If the number of deals has increased 10 fold and the number of good deals has increased 2 fold you will see more good deals but overall there is a lot of junk on there. A lot of the deals are not even deals if you had spent even a few minutes looking for the best prices for that specific item.

Great post, I agree.

Of course, unless we're all mind readers?

As an example check out leasing.com deals on the site, most lease deals posted by the same editor. All with special deal link id's that aren't part of the normal site URL structure and aren't listed on google search or their own twitter/facebook.

It's not open and fair to disallow user-posted deals but put paid business links in when even in their bio they say they do not get paid, but get direct tracked links for fun...

It's still a useful site and always a go to before purchasing something.

The amount of judgemental posts drives me insane though. The comment section used to be decent, good information and generally useful.

Comments on luxury watches or lease car deals is the same garbage, over and over again.

I still have some of the toilet roll I bought 2 years ago when HDUK listed an amazon mis-price on it. It was something like £4 for 12 packs of 9 rolls. Andrex too.

I can't help but instinctively open the website up when I load up a browser. It's certainly getting a lot more "sponsored" deals in, but there are the odd one or two deals that are utter killers. Another one I remember was Ryobi 5ah power tool batterys, you could buy 4 a week for £25 each if you had a business account. Sell them on eBay for £60 each. Every single week for about half a year.

The site only exists to make money for it's owners. It must be raking in millions in affiliate marketing, and best of all it's all user generated.

It would be a better platform if it shared income with those registered users who've posted hot deals. However, that's not how it works, and so I don't understand the reason for even posting there. You can access deals without commenting or voting.

If I ever see a deal on there worth pursuing I then look myself on topcashback, quidco and the like, and get the commission myself.

Phone contract deals that require you to claim cashback to make it worthwhile: cold.

Example
£35.99pm
- £10 one time discount
-£100 cashback
Total £26pcm

or the ridiculous ones that claim that the effective price is £2.51 pcm if you sacrifice a goat and remember to kiss woman on the third Tuesday of the month :p

Still plenty of goods deals on HUKD, not as much as there once were but enough of them.

Only problem we get now are people posting "deals" which are RRP and try to argue why its a deal

I've been using HUKD for a while now, not as long as some people here who mentioned 10 years, but I've definitely seen the deal quality go down.

Stuff I've noticed:
  • Deals where people post a site wide discount code against each individual item. i.e. £5 discount code and people start posting how it can apply to every item in the store one by one.
  • Exclusives/sponsored deals that are pretty much always junk and get pinned to the homepage because they are monetised rather than being good.
  • Deal editors being given preference for posting deals over random people.
There are still some good deals posted but it's fewer and further between than it was in the past. To be honest I've probably spent way too much on deals from there anyway so that might just be a good thing. I haven't followed many in the last few months that actually lead to me buying anything.

The problem as well is the sheer mass of traffic to the site, if its a particularly good deal these days/misprice some users will just buy it to resell on ebay

I've had some stonking deals with redemption cashback, my Pixel 3 XL deal has just ended but that worked out as £16 per month including the trade-in/recycling of my old pixel. Just stick it in your work diary to claim and you can't go wrong.

That's been a thing for a while. I remember during some of the PS4 misprices, you'd get people gleefully displaying receipts for 10 units or more.

Some people just see everything as a chance to make money.
