Hunt: Showdown (Crytek)

I'm tempted to get this for my teenage son and me - how does it play in duo, and do you get problems with unfair play - I know there is some PVP, but is all fair in love and war or gaming in this case?

On the EU server I've so far not come across anyone I could honestly say was cheating. Matchmaking is done based on statistic called MMR, every player gets an MMR calculated based on their skill and it tries to match player of similar MMR together. The only issue with this is that it takes a while for your MMR to settle initially because the number of data points is low. So matches at first will be erratic, some will feel easy (and might actually be vs bots) others will feel hard. The more you play the more this settles.

It's a game that is primarily based around PvP. The boss killing and banishing and then extraction part are just a scaffold to do interesting PvP, they offer goals and rewards that give players incentive to fight over them. I think this is an expectation that needs to be set right from the start.

Duo's is a really good experience, Trios can get very hectic and random players can be unpredictable and sometimes uncoordinated. Solos you have to rely on your own guile and cunning, duos is a sweet spot.

I just did one round, I have everything set to high (Thier is one setting above high) I get 209 FPS -140 FPS. The FPS mostly stays around 170-80. Games bit strange some it drops but nothing is happening still a nice smooth experience

Performance on modern hardware is extremely good compared to how nice it looks. They've done a lot with what they have, so people with higher end hardware especially can have their cake and eat it too. I get about 90fps all maxed out at 4k in quality DLSS with a 5080. It both looks amazing and has good enough frames for competitive PvP. If I drop everything from Ultra to Very high, and set DLSS to balanced instead of quality, I get about 140fps pretty solid.

You should understand the basics within a few days. 12 players split into teams (duos or trios, depending on your choice + the odd solo). You have to get 3 clues to find the location of the boss, each clue is located in various compounds on the map, after that you have to kill the boss, take the bounty and extract... all whilst other teams are trying to do the same.

Sometimes there are multiple bosses per round. Once you have the bounty, you are granted 5 seconds of dark sight (wall hax), which allows you to see the enemy, but the enemy team can also track the bountys location via the map and using their own more limited version of dark sight. It sounds a little confusing but if you watch any Hunt Showdown basics video it will make sense.

You will play against bots and other newbies if you play for the first time, at least until you get to rank 11 at which point the bots vanish and you will only go up against other players and it will most likely get a lot harder with a lot more dying until you get to grips with the gunplay, not triggering sound traps etc

You 100% need to use heaphones though, play through speakers and you're going to have a bad time picking up all the audio cues etc

Google reckons the learning curve is steep. How man days/weeks am I looking at before I know what I'm doing?

Great, detailed post up above BTW, kudos.
It's a steep curve, but everyone's on it. The matchmaking will eventually place you against appropriate skilled players.

I'd say it takes 2 weeks of casual play to understand what's happening around you and be useful in gunfights, rather than just target practice. Truly understanding the game people say takes 1000 hours+ and at 105 hours now, I'd expect that's true. YouTube is packed with newbie guides which are worth watching, they will make the adjustment to the game a lot faster.

Todays update is supposed to be the biggest update since the most recent map dropped a couple years back or whenever it was
