Hight, first off I am a 2nd year uni student (electrical and mechanical engineering)

I work off two computers mainly, my laptop and my desktop, I'm planning on using rsync or something similar to keep the files on the two computers synched

In my flat, the destop is connected to the router via a cat 5e ethernet cable, router is only 100mb/s though, and the laptop connects over a wireless g network. Both the desktop and laptop are running windows 7 RC

Question is I have a 2nd network port on my desktop (x58 board) from which which I can attatch a crossover cable to join the desktop and laptop. Currently in order to get the computers to use this connection I need to disable the wireless network card on my laptop. In addition this disablkes homegroop for some reason, I think because win 7 believes it's an unidentified network and therefore turns network discovey off

First how can I get windows 7 to think that this network is a private network?

2nd is ther a way of forcing windows to send data over the gigabit crossovercable?

Not tried this but.

control panel -> network and Internet -> Network connections -> Advanced menu -> Advanced settings

Check the binding order has lan first.

Should mean you should be able to turn of wireless (switch on side of laptop?) don't disable card and still have access to network if the lan is plugged in.

Ok, tried that, didn't work

I think it's because both my desktop and laptop believe that the crossover cable is a public network, andyone thing of a way to changd the crossover to a home network?

Disconnect the cable
Make sure wireless is connected
goto Network and sharing Centre
Click on the network icon (should be whatever your wireless is)just below View your Active networks

This should bring up set network properties dialogue
click merge or delete network locations
delete the location assigned to your cable (wireless should show as in use)

next time you plug it in it should re-detect and ask you what type of network it is

I would suggest merging them but if its anything like vista that could end in a world of pain.

I would suggest you do a full sync over the gigabit with the wireless disabled and then just use rsync to sync changes on a regular basis. Shouldn't take that long over wireless once the big sync is done. If you had a gigabit switch attached to the lan and dsl router I think it would come up ok. The network location stuff in vista /7 tries to detect network connection/internet which is where the problems start.

You can assign whatever network association you want once it's connected.

Do this via the network and sharing centre, or whatever they renamed it to in 7 - Can't be ****ed to open it and check.

Why are you running two network connections in the first place? Why not just use one or the other and add the ip/subnet in if you're running two ranges?

In order to get vista/7 to send data over the network cable/connection - use a persistent route.
