hey all anyone tried hypnotherapy for any reason? just curious as i recently starting seeing a hypnotherapist and i am finding it to be quite interesting - it is definately helping me in terms of my reasons for pursuing treatment and i am curious as to the hows in which it works and general accounts of how it has affected people and changed lifes.

so i thought id start a topic and see if anyone else out the has any opinions. ill check back later to see if anyone has anything to add

peace

I know someone who does hypnotherapy, as well as other forms of healing.

He's helped people to cure themselves of cancer (at its early stages), which has to be useful!

He's also helped fromer soldiers who had very bad side effects from the cocktail of drugs adminstered to them in Iraq - first time round. Although, he can't cure their problems, he has been able to help them deal with it better.

The trouble he has, is that many people come to him as a last resort. It's always easier to help someone when their problems are just starting and not completely out of hand.

My flatmate went to one 8 Months ago for a number of sessions to give up smoking. Cost him a fortune.

It seemed to of worked as he hasn't touched a fag since.

I can self hypnotise myself and the best thing Ive ever tried was a float tank , If I had a spare 3 grand Id have one myself there better than any drug believe me . something else.

I would also like to know more about hypnosis as a form of therapy. It'd definately be something that I would be interested in. I mean, if it aint a chemical imbalance then it has to be sub-conscious.

According to most scientists it's a load of hogwash from a scientific perspective, but the placebo effect allows you to do what you could do on your own anyway, if that makes sense. You have the ability to sort things out yourself, and the hypnotherapy just provides you with a guise to do it under. Quitting smoking, for example - perfectly possible without hypnotherapy, but some people find it easier after being persuaded "under hypnosis" for whatever reason.

Same with stage hypnotists - you're not actually under the control of the hypnotist at any point, you just allow yourself to become impressionable.

I would be very, very dubious about hypnotherapists claiming to be able to cure cancer, though. That just seems like exploitation :(

"Healing" doesn't work, or infact exist.

Placebos do. If thats how you can conjur them up, if it makes you better then fair play to you I suppose.

"According to most scientists" eh? I dont see how most 'scientists' would be qualified to comment unless their field is psychology... I also believe you'll find few psycholgists who are willing to dismiss it...

Although 10/10 for maintaining scientific scepticism, even if you have no content

Stop. Think for a second. You're suggesting that 'healing' doesn't work, and any results are merely the placebo effect... in which case a person has healed themselves through the psychological mechanism of a placebo... proving that healing can in fact work.

What I object to is the notion that it is the direct result of the actions of the 'healer' as opposed to feelings in the sufferer that the healer conjurs up.

Since that is pretty much biologically and chemically impossible I am calling shinannigans. :p

I have been using hypnotherapy to get over the breakup of my marraige.

It has made a big difference is many subtle ways - nothing instanly obvious, but I generally feel better about myself, and I rarely get short of breath through anxiety, which I used to suffer with.

The feeling of relaxation under hypnosis is fantastic :D

May I enquire as to whether you were paying over £100 per session?
