Hypothetical Car Options

A rather slow day at work has had me browsing PH for the past 45 minutes, imposing some rules picked out of thin air I'm struggling to find a hypothetical car to replace my Boxster S.

I've decided on no more than £10k + my car, which at a guess is probably worth £15k-£17k depending on what day of the week it is, so I was looking at about £25k.

Ideally I'd like it to be about the same age as the Boxster so around 2007. Equally I'm not bothered if it's older or newer, nothing massively old though as I quite like the perks that come with modern cars.

Ideally 2 seats, due to the fact it'll also need to be a convertible and I don't need more than 2 seats and most 4 seat convertibles look a bit gash.

Power, i would like at least equal to my car, ideally much closer to 400bhp so something like a 911 S.

Gearbox would have to be manual as I really don't get on with the nice new auto boxes, no matter how much better they are. This is a problem with me and not the gearboxes but I'll stick with the manual for now.

Mileage - couldn't care.

Running costs - this is the interesting stumbling block, I love the fact my Porsche has an OPC warranty and I don't worry about it at all, because if it goes wrong it's not my problem and I know after a phone call I get a nice new 62 plate Boxster to ponce about in for a few days while Porsche fix my car. Insurance isn't an issue (see below) and tax doesn't bother me as it's £450~ now anyway..

MPG I can deal with teens, servicing anything up to £1k a year, tyres £250 a corner is acceptable. At the moment if I wanted to extend my OPC warranty on my car when it runs out it would set me back £1k, so I'd like this hypothetical car to either cost less than £1k in repairs per year on average, or know that £1k would get me a decent warranty.

Everything points to a 911, but they are more than I would like to spend on a decent one, which is pushing me into stuff I would normally not consider and I'm getting lost.

Usually people would turn to their 'dream' car at this point as well, I do have one and it would be in budget and fit most/all of my self imposed criteria with one small exception - no one in the world will insure me on it. £600 will do me FC on a Boxster S at 22 but as soon as you mention an imported LHD Mustang of any sort I'm told to jog on. So sadly this is off the cars till I'm 25 I guess.

So what would OcUK suggest.

Hypothetically of course :)

tl:dr - £25k, convertible, ideally 2 seats, faster than my Boxster, around the same running costs, manual, about the same age, mileage not bothered, warranty would be a massive positive.

Looking at my tl:dr the car that jumps out at me is a 2007 Porsche Boxster S......

Keep it until you can insure the car you want?

An option, but I'm just hypothetically looking to see what falls into the above criteria.

I'm not specifically looking to change, it's more an exercise to see if/what is available and considered an upgrade from the Boxster when applying the above criteria.

If this was a fresh spec me a car thread the answer would be 'A Porsche Boxster S'.

Keep it. Changing for change sake is a massive waste of money.

22 and you've had a Boxster S for 1.5 years.

Are you royalty? :o

I'm 23 now but was 21 when I got the car, not royalty I just work hard :)

M3 convertible? Might have a fancy gearbox though, and isn't a 2 seater.

Didn't like the 335i I drove prior to the Boxster purchase at all, felt boring and not that special. I've been in an M3 and although it wasn't as boring I would still pick my Boxster over it.

This was exactly my conclusion whilst browsing PH earlier, I'm not actually looking for a change. I was just interested to see that if I was considering a change what could better the Boxster S with my criteria.

06/07 SLK 55 AMG?

Absolute rocket ship and awesome sound track. Auto box (it's not a bad one though) and not as well balanced as your Boxster but pretty much up there and one of the most enjoyable modern 2 seater convertible's, IMO.

EDIT: or even the "bigger" SL55 AMG.

M3 convertible. Having owned the Boxster and driven then M3 quite a bit I can categorically say that the M3 beats the living daylights out of the Boxster in every possible way.

Just ignore the rear seats.

It's not a case of if an autobox is good or not, I simply don't get on with them, don't want to get on with them and much prefer a manual at the moment. I'm sure this will change over the years but at the moment I would only consider a manual car, because that is the way I like driving.

I'd much rather a 911 than an SLK, CL or SL I reckon.

What Boxster did you own? I've driven a 335i and to be honest found it one of the biggest let downs. It was a total bore and did nothing for me at all. I'm aware the M3 is a totally different car in that respect and I've been in a number for passenger rides but never been massively blown away by them. To me it would appear a sideways step.
