Hypothetical question - Should the forum be shutdown at night?

Yes, downtime UK time is my go time where valuable and interesting thoughts are shared. You can't put a price on quality or if you did it would be thruppence.

Side note: why is your thread title a question? It's a statement: hypothetical forum question.

I think this kind of thing, as well as forum membership fees, have been discussed in the past. But I think the shop sales generated by traffic on the forum would outweigh the costs of running it.

It'd save anywhere between £150 and £210 per month in raw electricity costs based on the current market.
How about members pay £1 a month and put that towards a renewable energy fund ;)

The electricity cost of users online is more pertinent but I agree probably negligeable in the broad scheme of things

Would it bother you if the forum was shut down at night (UK time) to save running costs?

I'm sure certain mods could query the backend to provide some stats on the amount of traffic during said UK night periods. It may be higher than you think. Super bots roam the night ;)
It's a bit anti international forum users to do that though...but if the stats where genuinely showing mainly UK use and it saved considerable amounts annually, I think between say 1-6am you could do it.

wouldn't bother me coz I'm asleep, overnight is bs posts and bots and lack of moderation anyway.

could also bin speakers corner to save resources and time and make all the toxic weirdos go away.

I'd like to imagine the forums are hosted in modern cloud infrastructure which can be dynamically scaled based on load. So if no ones using it at night it should be somewhat nominal in cost to run, then when loads of people are using it it gets automatically ramped up to cope.

Besides, OCUK make an absoluete fortune, they can afford to run forums 24/7 and not charge for them :p.

Bring in ads and make the forum pay for itself, with a paywall for those that want an ad free experience, custom avatars, access to the official discord, early access to threads. The first 1337 "5 Star" tier members get a commemorative sam83uk funkopop, more coming soon!
