Hypothetical question - Should the forum be shutdown at night?

I'd like to imagine the forums are hosted in modern cloud infrastructure which can be dynamically scaled based on load. So if no ones using it at night it should be somewhat nominal in cost to run, then when loads of people are using it it gets automatically ramped up to cope.

Besides, OCUK make an absoluete fortune, they can afford to run forums 24/7 and not charge for them :p.

Pretty sure it's still run off a Core2duo machine in a beige box in the corner :D

It would bother me in the sense that I tend to visit it at night but it wouldn't be the end of world. They used to take it offline to mark events like Remembrance day or when Thatcher died.

You know, I have noticed of late that a lot of the bot/spammers do attempt to do so during the UK night time. So... Less moderation needed as well I guess by shutting the forum down for the night.

For several nights in a row a couple of weeks back was Chinese bot spam overnight :( fortunately can just ignore them and problem goes away though as far as the user end goes.

I probably drive 90% of the overnight electricity use though

Which poor mod has to take the graveyard shift to clean that up?
