Decided to defrost the freezer last Saturday. Switched off and left if for a while.
I came back and decided to speed up the process with the use of a sharp knife to hack away the ice.
I managed to punch a small hole in the roof of the compartment and all the refrigerant gas escaped - what a plonker!!

I'm hoping to claim for a new one on my contents insurance.
Any body done anything equally as stupid?

Sharp knife = bad
Butter knife = good.

Lucky you didn't get gassed to death. Well probably not really. Don't know what gases they use. Would have been fun for someone to come back and find your body frozen from the inside out and turning some weird purple/green colour from the gases.. no offence.

I just like the fact that you dont take yourself too seriously and happy to say 'your an idiot' some people would never dream of saying that even when there often more the idiots. We all make mistakes mate and sorry for getting philosophical. ;)

The best way to quickly defrost the freezer is to switch it off then get a bucket 2/3 full of boiling water. Remove all the trays and put the bucket in and shut the door making sure you have a few old towels at the base of the freezer to mop up the water. Then replace the bucket every 20 mins with fresh boiling water. The whole freezer should be done in less than an hour. Never use a knife/screwdriver/hammer to remove ice. ;)

The term my wife used to describe me afterwards was a bit stronger than idiot.

Thankfully I am covered for accidental damage, even including acts of supreme stupidity...

Edited for my terrible spelling.

Surely everyone knows the way to defrost a freezer is with several pans of hot water, a towel and a tray? Then sit back and relax.

Same thing except there was a shelf in the freezer that I thought was removable... It wasn't and was connected to the coolant pipes which fractured and I got a lung full of what ever the coolant was.

I came out of the kitchen looking a bit sheepish and said to miss K "I think I've done something bad"

I got a new fridge freezer out of the insurance.

I now use the boiling water technique
