I Am Fed Up With The BMW Driver Attitude on my Daily Commute

I don't see the problem. Usually if a BMW driver is tailgating me, it's because I'm stuck behind some woman in a 4X4 driving at half the speed limit. Do I get annoyed with the BMW driver? No. In fact I don't blame him.

As for dangerous overtaking, so what? If you're driving a high performance car and someone is "in your way" then you should damn well be allowed to drive past them. Nothing wrong with that, is there?

The fact is, there are bigger fish to fry on the roads:
1) Women in 4X4s
2) Women in smaller hatchbacks
3) Jag drivers who all seem to do 40 in a 60 and I'm too worried to go past them because they are actually driving bloody fast cars.
4) People who pull out on you on a main road when there's NOTHING behind you, forcing you to slow down. That would make me go BMW driver on their ass.

I've had to use the motorways a bit more recently. Couldn't help but think that:
- Most of the middle lane drivers who are dawdling along and forget to pull back into the left hand lane, despite there being no traffic, seem to be women
- The Golf TD is the latest "must have" car and appears to have replaced the Mondeo
- The real worst hogs appear to now be using either Audi's or SUVs.

ah, followed one today and wasnt sure if id seen one before. was it a straight 6 or V8? was it any better than the 530 performance wise?

i thought it was a re-badge that had been done as the car looked a bit ***** and had odd wheels (front/back) etc

535 was a 245bhp V8. It offered barely any more performance over the 231bhp 530i, becuase the extra weight of the V8 negated the extra horsepower, and you got the typical V8 downsides such as the recirculating ball steering and the 60/40 weight distribution hampering handling.

But the real reaosn they were pointless is becuase fuel economy, insurance, repairs and servicing wise they were no cheaper to run than the 4.4 litre 540i with 286bhp.

You either bought a 530i, or if you want a V8, you bought the 540i.

Same case with the smaller Sixes - 525i and 520i, both more or less the same to run as a 530.

Winds them up when I do it in a Punto.

I dont see how. If they were pressing on in a way that they'd be annoyed if a Punto went past them, you wouldnt be going past them. So the only option that leaves is that they are cruising at a constant speed. Why would they care if you go past?

I've been behind cars doing just under 70mph, I "cruise" in my banger at 75 (well I say cruise, but it wont go a lot faster ;)), but when I go to overtake then "ooh would you look at that!" they just happen to start speeding up - and I don't get past them until I'm doing nearer 80.

They do it just to be ****ers tbh. It's like they just need to remind you they "can" go faster if they want, because their significance on the road seems smaller to them otherwise, and the road is one place where they can do something to make them self feel less insignificant..

If we knew the answer to that then this thread wouldn't exist.

BMW drivers who can be described as "BMW Drivers" do get riled up when anything they consider inferior passes them.

I have been cruising down the M6 at about 90, and pass a dark red 5 series cruising at about 85. He immediately changed into the "BMW lane" and disappeared off in front of me. Then about 15 mins later, he's settled down to 85 and I catch pass him again, AND OFF HE GOES AGAIN! And 1 more time after that until I turned off for the M58.

Found another of these drivers while out in the 156, came sneaking up behind him at about 120, he was doing about 80 in the "BMW Lane" and we were the only 2 on that stretch of road, flash the headlights, he moved his 525i over and let us through, then saw it was an alfa, made a funny face, and pulled out back behind us with his main beams on, followed us past a length of traffic until the dual carriageway ended, we timed the roundabout to just sneak on and make him give way. After the roundabout he soon caught up and was lining us up for a section of dual carriageway ahead, but it seems a 1.8TS has more go as we left him standing. We got to the end of the short dual carriageway with him a long way back and settled into traffic doing about 50. Bout a minute later he came past on the hatchings of a junction doing about 80, same method a local dignitary used to kill himself and 2 others in the car he hit.

Maybe you don't see this behaviour from them by driving a BMW yourself?

I can't see how you can 'sneak' up up someone when you're doing 40mph more than them, it seems you have a bigger superiority complex than the bmw drivers as you seem to want to HAVE to beat them.

I'm not sure who is worse in that story above. How funny would it have been if that 525i was an undercover cop car :)

If it was it wouldn't have been ambling along in the overtaking lane like a Rover driver.

It's not the speed of BMW driver I mind, or the fact that he has a point to prove if you pass him, it's the undertaking and illegal overtaking that gets me annoyed.

@ BMW Driver (whoever you are): Just let me overtake whomever I'm overtaking, build up a reasonable gap then pull back in, then you can continue on your merry way.

Bombing along at 120 in anything is cool. :D

You'd have to own both a Rover and a Volvo to think otherwise.

The illegal overtaking annoys be because it's often comparatively dangerous. Sometimes the road markings are just lazy, I know, that doesn't annoy me so much, I still only overtake personally if the road markings let me.
