I started Uni in September doing a Computer Science course and I just can't bring myself to do any work, nothing captivates me about it everything is so dull and boring.

To make it worse I have a report due in for "Personal and Professional Development" tomorrow about how peoples sleep patterns differ with age (how relevant) and it's supposed to be 10-15 pages long and I haven't even started it. I just cannot motivate myself to do it, like a mental block for the whole thing.

I don't even know whether to bother with Uni anymore, but then I don't have a clue what I would do without it, I don't want to settle with some crappo job either I'm a smart person I'm just fed up of academic work at the moment.

Since when did a Uni define coursework length in pages? The only time I've ever seen that done is when it was a very limited amount of pages.

'Word limit: About 10-15 pages'

I was just reading the handbook and it said "You will be expected to write a short report (10 - 15 pages). This report should blah blah blah blah blah blah who cares blah blah blah...."

I kind of know where you are coming from, at college I am doing a IT Technical Support course which from my understanding when I applied for it I was told it would 90% practical work or atleast technical related.

Now that I am 2 months in and I have done a lot of work I am now being told I have to complete and pass the following assignement which is totally not relevent to the course or I will fail everything.

Everyone on the course hates it but just has to get on with it unless we want to fail.

Just think of the oppertunities open to you once you finish uni.

Take a year out, go travelling as they say. If you're not up for it now, imagine a couple of years down the road. Most important thing is to take time to think about it seriously and be honest with yourself. You probably don't want to do the course then get stuck in a 9 to 5, seems like you've been on a conveyor belt of mass produced robots, churned out one after another. So yeah maybe travelling is the answer, bit of a rant I know, hope it helped.

Same here... well only for my Java programming module... its just so annoying at times.

Rest of my chem course I find abit boring but thats prolly because it seems pretty simple.

But its all good, apart from Java. :)

I've had several reports that had a page limit rather than a word count, in fact, I can't think of any work I've ever had to do at uni that had a word count.

I've never had any assignment that defines the limit through the number of pages. It's always been around 2,500 words. The longest assignment I've done this semester was about 5,000 in total, but it had no word-limit and it was a good 25+ pages in total.

With size 12 font, justified text and 1.5 line-spacing, I think a 10 page report is about 2,500 words, so it's not that much really.

The best advice I can give is just attempt to start it right now. Open it up, and try to form an introduction. With any luck you'll find it just falls together.

Well depends on what you want to do with your time. If you constantly want to go out and get hammered or whatever then of course you won't want to do your work.

If you want to get somewhere in life, you're going to have to get some work done, even if it is very dull.

Im in my second year now doing a computing degree so this comes from personal experience. I found that during my first semester of year one i just wanted to have fun and resulted in me not getting much work done. Come Christmas and it dawns on me that i barely know anything, meaning i had to study my ass off during my holidays just so i could get a 2:1.

Semester 2, year 1, i learnt my lesson and did all my work and study on time and got firsts for everything bringing my year average to a first.

With any course (even jobs maybe?) there are dull parts, you just need to stick with it. Maybe consider a different course if you really can't find anything in your programme that interests you.

Wow you sound just like me! Unfortunately my work is quite interesting and relevant and i can barely get myself to do it.

I just tend to think, if i don't do it, im screwed. Ultimately it needs to get done, its probably not that hard its just very tedious. Think of it as means to an end, and that end is a good job good $$$ and a nice motor (or whatever it is you want :p).

Many people get like this the day before a huge assignment is in. Personally, I love my degree and everything about the university and my department, BUT, now and again when having a huge report/assignment due in the next day I'll get annoyed and think it's crap. I soon realise it isn't, hand the work in and get good marks and be pleased I put the effort in.

1st year though, it's always naff work. Get by, get a resonable grade and do the real interesting stuff in year2 + beyond.

However, regarding word/page count, it varies from lecturer to lecturer. A few times a lecturer has said 'about 4 sides minus histograms' etc. but only for rough guidelines, not set in stone. Generally, with yr1 essays for example, they'd simply be 1500words +/-10%.

Learning how to pass exams and writing reports on completely pointless things to get a piece of paper that says your special, just like the other 50% of people your age... Welcome to Uni!

Im not bitter, honnest.

iam the same.. iave got an assiment due by 2moz 4oclock, and iam only just doing it now.. the lack of moivation is starting to piee me off tbh. iam hoping its just because its the end of the year and iam tierd yada yadas.. maybes the same for you?

Don't forget to spell check it matey :)

Usually assignments are word counts, like the funny guy just said size 48 font can cover 10-15 pages fairly easy!

I think you need to assess what you want to actually do and if it is viable to do so.

Maybe your mind is focused on something else? or the sudden shock of having to do such an assignment could bother you and takes time for you to adjust? What alternatives do you have besides uni work?

These are questions to ask yourself, not answer to me btw :P

The way I see it, is that you are at that uni at least until the end of the year if you choose to stay till then so there is no point in not trying.

I'm soo happy i've finished uni and got my degree I know what its like and theres nothing worse. Just get cracking now do it and don't think, will be done by deadline and you will be the happiest then and go out on a big bender.
