I don't understand some people.....

My mate had a battered old fiat cinquecento 900 that he picked up for pocket money, the thrill of not knowing if you were going to come out the other end alive or die in a tin roller skate was much better than sitting in a boring brand new car :D

I've just taken delivery of my first ever new car, and I'll be honest the affordable (for me) monthly payments were a big part of it.

In the past I've never spent more than 11k, I think the last 3 cars I've had have been 3k, 8k, 11k...now 37k...oops :D

I can definitely see the attraction of a new car, and I think I just needed to know for myself if it really is worth it or not.

She got 5 days free insurance with it too, I asked how much insurance was and she said she hadn't checked yet :P

is she waiting for that to run out? :D

she will get another 200 added to her monthly and her "only 170" a month will soon turn into 370 ;)

That's just like a mate of mine. He did the same thing, but with a ragged Fiat 127 'Supersport'. It went like a little go-kart, but if you had a God then you prayed to him the whole time you were in that thing.

There is worse...girl I know is spunking £220 a month + balloon for a Hyundai i10

Total amount payable of £16.2k!!!

She too had only just passed when she decided to get it!

You didn't shout at people waiting for buses did you? :D

My first car was a £350 G-reg 1.3 escort (bought 2002) :D.

Pulled to the left under braking
Had a hole in the tank so could only fill half way. :D
And when I went above 70 (downhill on motorways) it would rattle like **** :D

Impatience, attractive monthlies and not fully appreciating the long term costs. My gf is 2.5 years into a 5 year hire purchase agreement for a 62 plate bottom of the range fiesta (doesn't even have alloys :o) at a monthly cost of £180 (with her deposit being a broken down old pug 206). Don't want to think about what it will be worth when the agreement is over..

She signed up before we met otherwise I would have advised appropriately :p

Ford are doing 0% on their "options" finance, with £1600 off, and an aditional £500 off if you go for a test drive before the end of this month. She could've had a new Fiesta ST for the same price. :D

15.5k buys you an incredible variety of awesome cars, it's absolutely crazy money.

Having said that, I am guilty of spending 2+ years on an overpriced (for my usage, anyway) phone contract because "that's the way you get a phone". When I actually sat down and went through the numbers buying a phone outright I made the switch though.

I've always taken the view, that it's deals like this that make it cheaper for those that are prepared to look around for the best deal.

I did similar with my first car not long back, just after passing my test.
It wasn't so much about wanting something shiny and new, but about getting something that has a known cost to run. ~£200/month (not counting tyres and insurance, which would be the same whether buying a shed or a new car) and the knowledge that if anything breaks it won't cost you extra and you get a free courtesy car was worth it, to me at least.

Public Transport would be less reliable, and less flexible, and at the end of the day cost about the same.

Also, getting enough saved up to actually purchase a car without finance is a nightmare when you're young, especially when you have to think about things like trying to purchase a house/move out from your parents house before you're 30. I'd rather rent a car and buy a house, than buy a car and rent a house.

My next car will be a shed and a set of wrenches, however.

Not bad...

This seems to be a fairly common thing nowadays, ohhh well let them get themselves into debt over a terrible car. Tbh I spend a tonne on mods for my car which I will never get back unless I break the car for parts.

A friend of mine passed her driving test on friday (3days ago) and was looking for a car, I suggested the usual fiesta or focus type and offered to help her check them out.

Anyways, she turns up today with a new corsa 1.4 sri vx line.
The best part, shes got it from motorpoint (lol), I asked what is cost her and she said "it's only 170 a month"

Anyway I looked into it.....

£1080 deposit
£171.50 a month
final payment £6250
total payable = 15,558 (not inc deposit)

15.5 grand!!!!!! for a 75bhp 1.4 corsa!!!!!

There's no wonder most in the country are in debt.

Putting aside the finance, my first car was a £200 and was a 1.5 hyundai lantra Jura. The definition of a sounds system banger.

I find it odd that the new 1.4 is 75hp when the old Corsa C 1.4 twinport was 90hp and lighter. Why make a car worse than it already was in the engine dept? The old 1.2 twin port was 75hp.

15 grand for a 75hp Corsa. Just wow... I hope theres no steep hills nearby.

Why do people even buy these cars? Look at what 15k can buy and these people must be mental.

For a first car, old banger all the way tbh.
