I don't understand some people.....

15 grand for a 75hp Corsa. Just wow... I hope theres no steep hills nearby.

Why do people even buy these cars? Look at what 15k can buy and these people must be mental.

For a first car, old banger all the way tbh.

Its not £15k though, its £170pm :p

The insurance premium extremely high on anything else so... oh wait.

Ford are doing 0% on their "options" finance, with £1600 off, and an aditional £500 off if you go for a test drive before the end of this month. She could've had a new Fiesta ST for the same price. :D

I was just about to say, I bought a brand new Fiesta ST 3 for not much more than this 2 years ago. Now it is even better as Ford are offering 0% finance so as you say she could have had a brand new ST-3 for pretty much the same cost.

I think people just don't bother to research/look at car brokers/get dealers to price match.

Not saying a Fiesta ST is a particular good choice for a new driver, but the point is she could have got something so much better for the money. I got an email from drive the deal the other day and she could have got a Focus 125bhp Titanium navigation for ~15k with 0% finance...

I bet the deposit/ monthly payments would have been similar as well.

Lol

Putting aside the finance, my first car was a £200 and was a 1.5 hyundai lantra Jura. The definition of a sounds system banger.

I find it odd that the new 1.4 is 75hp when the old Corsa C 1.4 twinport was 90hp and lighter. Why make a car worse than it already was in the engine dept? The old 1.2 twin port was 75hp.

Random quoting of myself... the 1.4 is 88hp and the 1.2 is 69 horses... I conclude that they are still using the twinports in both engine and that the only corsa close to 75hp is the 1.3 diesel with 73hp.

To be fair the 1.4 is the pick of the bunch, chain driven engine as opposed to a belt in the 1.2 and absolutely bullet proof. I genuinely believe that there are worse cars out there on these kinds of deals.

It's on the parkers list

** it's also on the vauxhall website configuration thingy. (It's a B14XEJ if that hels according to the vauxhall site) :)

I don't feel quite so bad about the PCP I nearly took out at the weekend, at least I'd have got an f30 touring (which would actually suit my needs) but I had checked the insurance first - less FC to insure a £14k 4yr old BMW than my £650 17 year old Volvo(!)

But, unlike the daft bint here, I bothered to run it by the OC/UK collective and quickly binned the idea!

Reminds me a little of the kid who bought my old Corsa Dti, phoned the following day bleating he couldn't insure it and wanted a refund!

Lol. I hate new cars. They are all just money pits. As soon as you drive it out the garage that's £2000 gone. Much prefer to have an older more reliable car like a Toyota celica, mk1 mx5 or maybe even an e30 BMW estate. :D

A corsa is also very questionable. All the hot girls seem to drive Fiat 500 from what I have seen.

Yikes! A large part of the problem is instantaneous want of something shiny; kids these days (I'm 25, I'm allowed to say that now right :p)

But ultimately if she can afford the monthlies which she presumably can, it's not really an issue.

I think thats the first time i've heard a 1.4 corsa described as "shiny"

Not gonna lie i can think of a LOT of better cars to buy for a first driver, hell tbh i'd buy the car i currently have and spend the remainder on insurance.....

Mad...

I've bought my first car recently, 58 plate Ford Focus, paid £3k outright.

50k Miles and a new timing belt at time of purchase and I think I've got myself a pretty good deal, the car is sound and I have no worries about it mechanically.

Insurance was on the cheaper end too (although not 'cheap'), insurers tend to see Fords more favorably for some reason... I'm 18 and passed halloween just gone, this is a 1.6 Petrol and insurance is costing me the same as it would on a 1.2 Corsa, don't think I could have done better to be fair.

(I've also paid insurance outright, which helps)

I don't see the point in paying monthly, I'll get a 'shiny' car when I can afford and want one, but it makes me laugh how I've got a car that's much higher spec than any other new drivers I know that are paying monthly premiums and will end up paying nearly 10k more than me in the long run...

I'm living proof that you don't have to have a s***ty old banger as a first car if you don't want one, but you can still spend money properly.

Crazy, in a years time it will be worth what 8k at which point she will owe a lot more than the car is worth......

She should have got a VW Up, Seat Mii as a first car, Group 1-3, £20 tax and 50+ miles per gallon and 2014 (1yr warranty remaining) can be had for around 6k.

Half the price, half the running cost and in 2yr time it will only lose a couple of grand in value.

Not all kids are so savvy though, my first car was a banger, £650 worth. :D

Mines was a £100.

Lasted 1 week before I burnt out a clutch and a set of tyres.

3 weeks before it was wrapped around a lampost

I think most kids are more sensible than my era in cars though.

A friend of mine passed her driving test on friday (3days ago) and was looking for a car, I suggested the usual fiesta or focus type and offered to help her check them out.

Anyways, she turns up today with a new corsa 1.4 sri vx line.
The best part, shes got it from motorpoint (lol), I asked what is cost her and she said "it's only 170 a month"

Anyway I looked into it.....

£1080 deposit
£171.50 a month
final payment £6250
total payable = 15,558 (not inc deposit)

15.5 grand!!!!!! for a 75bhp 1.4 corsa!!!!!

There's no wonder most in the country are in debt.

If it's new, it's not that hideous (bare with me) as that model line starts at £14,000 or there about.

I mean, you would have to be mental to actually pay that, but it's not that far off what the car is supposed to cost new.

Another person going into debt for a crap car. Done that before, but not down the PCP route, i will never go back down that road again. As long as you can use a spanner, wrench and willing to work on a car your self older cars are cheaper to run.
My first 1st car cost me £250.0 MK1 Clio 1.4 RT, before i had even past my test. Spent another £200ish fixing it and time with my old man teaching me the basics of car mechanics. I honestly think buying a older is the best way for younger driver, as almost everyone will prang their first car.

I agree if we're only talking about the financial side of it, but what if it's more than a prang? We all know that young drivers are more likely to get in a serious accident, and that's where a new car makes the most sense. I saw a video the other day comparing a crash test of two small hatchbacks, one brand new and one about 15 years old - the difference was scary. The driver of the new car would have walked away, but the driver of the old car would be dead.

I'm not saying I agree with her choice of car though...

Yes safety wise you are correct a newer car is better. Being a father i do see this side, but i would still rather my teach my kids how to service a car, change a wheel and if they want to learn more after that i will help them too. At least they learn some basic skills on how to look after a car, even if it only basic. Its also a life lesson, that if you loo after something it will look after you to a degree.

That's a lot of money for a Corsa. I think I paid a little under 15k for my brand new Corsa VXR. Back in 2008 iirc.... Can't believe that was almost ten years ago.

Anyway, your mate is a plonka. For entering into such an agreement for a crap car. Sorry.

You need to remember that some people are either stubborn or don't have good people around them to advise them properly. We are in a world where people can get cheap debt and are overly concerned with how other people perceive them. For most people who view a computer forum with quite a specialist motors forum it seems like a terrible deal (it is). Many people won't understand the spec of the car and may think "she is doing ok with her brand new car" and not delve any deeper.

She will learn her lesson. When she wants proper finance for a mortgage and she'll have to pay this off for the next X years I think it will hit home what a terrible deal it was.
