I fancy a space game

X3 is pretty decent but for the love of god don't play eve, if it played like their trailers it'd be awesome but it plays like an excel spreadsheet where only being able to do anything at 10 percent speed is classed as a "feature".

Or, wait for elite / star citizen.

Yawn. You're clearly one of those people that didn't play any of the good aspects of Eve and then feel the need to spread talk of everything being like that.
If Eve really played like that do you actually think anyone would play it? Fine you don't like it but don't talk crap. It's not like it's the only game to not be quite a shiny as it's trailers either...

Well I've already played Eve and I think it's a brilliant game, just not quite right for my circumstances. My gaming time is limited and unpredictable (young child) so I can't commit to being in a corp and so as a solo player I've got pretty much as far as I can in High Sec.
I presume your dig about 10% speed is related to the Time Dilation of large scale fleet engagements? Of course that only happens when a large number of ships are fighting at the same time and that it's a very reasonable solution to the problem of lag and server overload in extreme circumstances but I'm sure you already knew that.

Well I decided to get the X3 Terran War pack on Steam last night and give Albion Prelude a go. I started an un-modded game just to have a little look but after reading around I think I'm going to try the XRM mod.
First impressions are mixed, very pretty, definitely lots of potential but I can see why people would be put off. It's not exactly welcoming for a new player is it :)

The X3 series is fantastic but it does take a while to get to grips with, much like eve in that sense I guess. Stick with it because its worth it. For some reason I absolutely love the dead is dead mode too even though it usually ends with me splattered all over a random asteroid/station/ship due to hitting the boost at the wrong time in an M5.

If you fancy jumping back into eve but are sick to death of highsec then the best thing you can do is buy a bunch of t1 frigs and fit them all up and just fly out into low/null and look for a fight with the goal to just have fun and getting blown up in a blaze of glory. Once you get over the initial fear of loss eve really opens up.

X3 is one of the best games you can get, period. But it does require dedication much like Eve, which is why I used it as an alternative to Eve for a few years. Benefits of X3? You can speed time up and you can pause lol

Being able to actually dogfight is fun too.

I played a good bit of X3 before figuring out what seta was :D

Anywhere apart from Steam to get a downloadable copy of X3: Terran Conflict? With the bay having new copies for £8 I'm reluctant to give steam £16 :-)

Try the Humble Bundle Store, payments are in USD so works out cheap if you are paying in GBP. Usually steam codes too

Also Darkstar One was a relatively good Space-sim as I recall.
I played it straight after having had a load of Freelancer sessions... and it was tosh. Absolute tosh. I felt bad as I recommended it to a friend and he was even more vehement in his dislike! :D
If you've never played any/many spacey games, it is OK... but it's basically limited Freelancer without any soul. The guy voicing the main character sounds like he went to the Bill Hicks School of Awful Beatles Accents!

By contrast, I had a go on the Elite Alpha combat scenarios last night - WICKED FUN!!!
