I feel sick. Just had to take a stray cat to the RSPCA/Vets

My misses did a few days in a vet last week since she is wanting to do vetenary nursing at uni. Sadly she was saying if the RSPCA won't fund the treatment because it costs too much, they just put the animals down. When she was there a cat was brought in with a boken hip, it cost too much to fix so sleepy time went Mr Cat.

Definatly good on you for doing the right thing though, many people wouldn't have bothered. You will get 50 cat virgins in the afterlife now :)

Know how it feels mate :(

You did the right thing and should be proud, as most others wouldn't. If you're like me you'll be still fretting over it regardless of the kind support of OcUK. Let us know how the cat gets on.

/respect.

I am restless and cannot seem to focus. Going to raise a few glasses to the little bugger tonight.

So much for the RSPCA's remit then. :(

The rspca don't have bottomless funding (because they rely on people, and how many of the people here are a member, or donate? I know I dont.), and a lot of what they do is stopping animal cruelty in homes, and cleaning up after environmental disasters. Vets may be obligated to treat wildlife, I don't know about strays though. Vets and RSPCA have to draw a line on what they can and cannot do, or they'd be out of money stupidly fast.

You did well to look after the poor guy :(

I appreciate that the RSPCA is reliant on donations but the whole attitude kind of stunk. I also understand veterinarian surgeries have to make money, however stuck between the two was a frightened, poorly cat who's only "crime" was to be abandoned.

Circumstances meant we could not take him in under our wing so, unfortunately, he had to be tossed into the wind of fate.

At least if he is put down I know that me and the wife did all we could to help the little guy out. :(

Nobody would think ill of you for not taking it in, thats a completely unreasonable expectation! You did exactly what you could and should, and way more than you had to. You gave him more of a chance than he had.

Let us know how the fella got on. You did outstandingly.

Cats never get on with other cats to start with so should the idea of adoption be on your mind it can work out eventually.

As has been said you have done all you can do and more than a lot of people.

I lost one of my cats on the weekend after it was hit by a car. I found him and I am relieved (a little) that I did as I don't now have to wonder were he is. I doubt that anybody would have taken him to the vets as you did - at which point he would've been ID'd as mine due to being chipped.

Well done :)

Fair play to you, mate. There aren't enough people who would have gone to the lengths you did and you have my full respect (for what it's worth) for taking it upon yourself to do something for that poor animal.

I had something similar a few months ago when I heard a cat obviously in distress outside our house one morning. Went out to find a kitten, no more than a few months old lying in our neighbours driveway clearly hurt. He appeared to have some blood stains on his back legs. I too phoned the RSPCA and received little or no support or assistance. I rang my local vets who said that they would treat the cat but at my expense!!

Eventually managed to get hold of the cat's protection league phone number who were brilliant and told me to get it to a vets and they would look after the medical bills.

Found out later that he had broken both legs, presumably after being run over by a car. Posted leaflets round our entire estate asking if anyone owned the cat and received zero response.

The good news is that he has made a full recovery and has been rehoused by the CPL (after being unfortunately christened Norbert).

As an animal lover I don't support the RSPCA but choose private animal sanctuarys for any donations etc. You usually find these places always take in injured animals without question
The RSPCA policy is' prevention' they aren't interested if something already happened

I once phoned the RSPCA to report that a dog was in the boot of a car in Morrisons on one of the hottest days of the year, the poor thing was panting like hell. They just said that the owners would probably be back soon...
