The vet said he was too far gone and had to be put to sleep.

LS at least you know you did the best you could for him, and got him to someone who could put him out of his pain.

OP, sorry it had to be that way knew you would have been really rooting for it to pull through. At least it's in a better place now and that someone (you) did their best to save it.

It's nice to see that some people are decent human beings. Respect to you and though it didn't work out for the best at least you showed compassion and did the right thing.
