i get middle finger when overtaking?

It's probably the fact you're ragging the car to do it, especially in an old car, tends to make people think you're some kind of dick trying to race the world.

I guess my 11 year old Honda DOHC doesn't help matters :o

As long as you don't do Senna overtakes, you're fine..

I get some flashes and probably some gestures also but I am never looking at them when I am overtaking.

If I perform a totally valid overtake and someone flashes me they get the bird.

Most of the time people around here are going so damn slow I will gladly drop into 1st and give it loads.

Whats the bird?

I do occasionally get a flash of the lights/middle finger when overtaking (safely I might add), like Fox says this happens to most people occasionally, but on a dual carriage way?

Why would anyone do that on a dual carriageway?

he must have been tailgating them or they saw him tanking down the fast lane an a ton...

I'ver never noticed anyone give me the finger... and I usually look at the other drive incase its a large boobed chick and I can oggle...

I forgot that you have, apparently, overtaken every other motorist in the UK, making you supremely qualified to make that comment. I should think it also took quite some time to observe the overtaking actions of everyone else that posted here before you were able to come to the conclusion that we all drive like idiots.
Or, and I prefer this option, you just like to cause annoyance ;)

well for 7 years I did 30 - 40k miles a year, and never noticed anyone gesture me appart from the odd mistakes I made... so I am fairly qualified and I agre with fox... if you are getting gestured reguarly there is something wrong with your driving...

the only factor I cannot comment on is the type of car your are drive.. maybe flash cars get gestured more??? also I never did much travel above leeds.. maybe its a north thing?

I have a mate that never understood why people kept flashing him while overtaking.... however he was overtaking at 100mph+ and the on comming car was porbably 2/3 seconds away when he pulled in..

I don't think I've ever looked at the person whilst overtaking them

I got flashed the other day overtaking someone on a dual carrageway in fog, I assume they felt that I should have been driving at 50 like them, or that the fog wasn't thick enough to justify fog lights on.

the other week i saw out in the 1.4 fiesta with the gf. i was drving.

i approached one of my favourite roads and an X6 caught me up very quickly. i thought id see how quick he was down one of my favourite b roads going whilst i was in a pretty nimble car.

i had a good little laugh trying to keep him at bay but then we got to a straight and this x6 SHOT past. turned out it was badged as an M and i was really impressed.

i actually flashed him when he got past to congratulate him for having an awesome car and the skills to make it go quickly

hopefully he didnt think i was a berk trying to berate him for daring to overtake??

Do you also wave at people using one finger? I think we might have solved this mystery.

Turn your ******* fog lights off!

This! Although I prefer to call them Chav lights. Or are you tailgating them before you pull out?

Either way I can't imagine you'd get the finger so often without doing something to **** off the other drivers ..... unless of course you are driving through America in one of the cars from the Top Gear $1000 challenge!

If you were travelling at 50+, it wasn't :p

They'd be no good for illuminating the road at that speed and all they'd do is dazzle other drivers.

Yeah that was probably it then :p, I had come out of the thickest part and it was thinning

Although I thought the idea of fog lights was to make you more visible, not to light up the road.

I think only in UK people don't like when you overtake them (on single carriageways), sometimes they will speed up to make it impossible for you to overtake them, flash lights, use horn, show you a finger etc.

Never happened to me when driving abroad, in some countries you tend to overtake a lot as they don't have as good road infrastructure, many main roads are only single carriageways.
