3D printers. The commericial ones are veryy very very expensive and use lasers to sinter powdered plastics at the focal point. There are hoever many other ways of doing it.

Might be worth having a browse on http://www.thingiverse.com lots of cool things on there that people have made.
Also, a nice video of the MakerBot in action:
You'll notice the first two layers it prints are a raft followed by a perimeter on the third layer and an infill. The next few layers then go perimeter -> infill until eventually just doing several layers of the perimeter, the video ends before it gets to this stage though.

Oh yes, some awesome things have been coming out of the laser lately. So awesome in fact that you may all be buying the stuff for you or your kids this or next Christmas!!

Just been having a bit of a look, there really is some cool stuff made on there!! I noticed under the tools section there was the CraftRobo which I have, though not much has been made with it sadly.
Sounds...exciting....lol
Look forward to seeing more stuff as and when you make things you can show us.

That is pretty sweet. But not as sweet as having a laser in the back garden
I can do some designs, pop in and have them in seconds.As for the stuff I can't show you guys yet, it is 100% epic and awesome! I even amaze myself sometimes

Great thread, I have access to a laser and prototyping machines at work.
The most recent thing I made was a custom external hard drive stand out of laser ply but it looks pants compared to such things as that monster ipod dock!
Managed to set some things on fire ( not using the correct types of plastic, like cd cases etc ) but overall laser cutters are awesome 
Keep up the good work, can't wait to see what the secret thing is!
Oh and that boxmaker is a very handy tool so cheers for that
