hi,
I had a virus and it took over my desktopm I thought I was being clever by finding the path of the desktop picture and deleting it. Well after that I ran an anti virus and it deleted it.
I now cannot change my desktop picture its just plain grey. How do fix this?

Try...

Right click on the desktop
Properties
Click the Desktop tab
Click on Customize Desktop button
Click the Web Tab
Untick any boxes within there.

Normally the Virus adds a webpage style background.
 
the virus has gone completely its just disabled the right to change backgrounds now :(

you actually see the mouse move like its being remote controlled?

the virus has probbley added a policy so you cannot change the desktop wallpaper

goto start - run - gpedit.msc

play around in that, and remove and settings that are enabled
 
Indeed it will be a group policy issue. Open the group Policy editor by running gpedit.msc from the Run dialog. You will need to look under Computer Configuration and User Configuration.

The item you need to edit is:
Code: 
Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Display > Prevent changing wallpaper
Set this to Not configured.

Theres a registry change which may be necessary, had to do it on dads laptop.
 
If you like download HiJackThis (www.merijn.org) and post a HiJackThis log here and I will go through it to ensure your fully rid of the infection.

It should also show the part which is stopping you from changing desktop.

there may be other problems that aren't appararent at the moment, hjt log will show if anything dodgy is running at startup..

Not one to rush into things?

Most likely a group policy, you could also try running msconfig to see if anything is running at startup that looks suspicous

Why re-install when we can help him fix it? Check your GPO and post your HJT logs.

EDIT: It might also be worth running: sfc /scannow from the Run dialog. This will check all your system files.

It wont run gpedit.msc :(

do you use Windows XP Pro or Home mate?

not too sure if the Home version has got GPEDIT.MSC or support group policies

if you have home, PM me your msn address and i can send you the file if you wanna
