Well, hate is a strong word but I genuinely dislike the horror genre in general. I've seen many but they all amount to be nothing more than useless crap. The story is mostly variations of the same, the characters are useless and the gore is pathetic.

The only horror movie I actually found decent was Silent Hill....if you'd even class that as a horror.

So, anyone fancy changing my opinion? Recommend me a scary movie that has a decent story and characters? I don't mind scary/jumpy/gory but story, well shot and good characters are what really does it for me.

I didn't like the look of pitch black at the time of release, mainly due to Vin Diesel :p However, it might be worth a look :)

Forgot to mention, I've also seen the usual 28 days/weeks later, dawn of the dead, sixth sense etc

'The Unborn' is supposed to be quite good although I haven't seen it yet (it's not released here in Prague until next month)

Rec or Record

its a spanish zombie flick, genuinely scary and very well made.
kinda a mix between 28days and cloverfield

theres also a us version made recently, dosnt look as good though, called quarantine

John Carpenter flicks :

The Fog
Prince of Darkness
The Thing
In The Mouth of Madness

Others :

The Descent
[REC]
Martyrs
A L'Interieur (Inside)
Storm Warning
Scarecrows
The Signal
Hatchet
The Children
Splinter

Just some examples of decent ones. As ever though, opinion may vary.

Have you seen this yet? I'm off to see it next week. I can't help thinking that its bark is going to be worse than its bite.

My contributions:

God Tier

The Orphanage
Ils
Shutter [Thai]
Alien + Aliens

Good Tier

Ringu
Ju-on
Switchblade Romance
Frontiers
[rec]
The Descent

Saw

Extreme Tier

August Underground
Guinea Pig
Aftermath
Niku Daruma
Red Room 1 & 2

Glad to see you liked Silent Hill, I really enjoyed it as well, even though the dialogue was daft in places. There are other world cinema films such as Three Extremes or Irreversible which, though excellent, I wouldn't really class as horror.

I love horror but all these Hollywood "OMG WTF HOW MUCH GORE CAN WE PUT IN" films get on my nerves. There's nothing "scary" about watching gore, it's just disgusting. Decent horror films work on emotion and suspense, not sheer repulsiveness.

28 days later, awesome film. I usually hate horror film's but this was one work of art in my opinion.

I don't know if Alien is classed as Horror but it's an awesome film.

Not sure if it'd be classed as horror, but I thought Sunshine was really good.

Sunshine is awesome! I'd recommend watching this also.

Some good suggestions here, thanks. :)

I've just finished watching The Descent. It was ok, though some of the cast were quite irritating. I hate the way they sharply turned into action women.

Irreversible which, though excellent, I wouldn't really class as horror.
I found this incredibly hard to watch, both the camera work and the sick raping etc.

I'd recommend REC, its the only film I've watched recently which actualy scared me!
The Spanish version or the American version, Quarantine?
Not sure if it'd be classed as horror, but I thought Sunshine was really good.
I found Sunshine quite disappointing which is sad as I heard a lot of positive recommendations.

The Unborn is terrible, don't waste your money on it.

I really dislike horror at the moment because they all concentrate on gore. I thought the Strangers was really good though because even though there wasn't much in the way of action the tension was built up really well.
