I recently gave a friend of mine my old computer,I built the system about 4 years ago and it always worked fine but recently she has been having problems with her net connection, for some reason it will drop the connection I have tied to troubleshoot the problem the error windows 7 gives is
"Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration"
I have googled this and it would seem that it is not an uncommon problem but I am yet to find a reolution I was wondering if anyone here had ever had this and managed to find a fix. I have reinstalled windows 7 64bit but the problem persists the lights on the router are always solid she is with BT internet adsl

Thanks

Has she put anything new on her home network, like a phone/iPad etc?

Wild guess is that her machine is configured with a static IP and the routers DHCP server is giving that same IP to a new device.
Could also be a problem with the router itself.

i had a similar issue with my old router it stopped and dropeed the network connection only worked when i set the speed & Duplex to 10Mb Full Duplex. Does the PC retain the IP config when set manually?
What router is you're freind using?
Have you tried replacing the NIC?

Thanks for the replies,it is a new model home hub I'm not familiar with this router she is using the onboard net controller I never in all the years I used this PC had the problem she has I was thinking of connecting my laptop up to the hub and seeing if I could replicate the issue, if I type ipconfig from a command prompt to get ip network details I will manually insert them to see if that helps.

check the Network adapter Speed and Duplex Settings, Might be worth changing from Auto Negotiate to 100MB / 1000MB Full Duplex depending what its currrently set at.

Also might be worth checking / changing the Ethernet cable to rule this out
