I have a simple question

I think by the time your mate is done with it my only objective would be to drive it to its death, target: half a million :D

Lol, was one of my goals to do the 250k in it but needs must and had new car so off it went. Actually one of Rilot's friends too i do believe

A mate just bought a rather nice 02 325ci with xenons, leather, high miles but FSH and it seems a rather nice unabused example for £5k, which I thought was a bargain, too good to be true but it all seems as it should be and certainly not tatty or shabby.

Its 10 years old though so its going to cost about a grand over the next 6 months anyway :p

Yep, possibly more :p

But equally it could cost a lot less - the luck of the draw buying old cars!

My 13 year old 328i e36 - which by my own admission is hardly the best example in existence - has cost me just shy of £500 in servicing,& repairs over the past 11 months & 9k miles.

(why do I just know I'm going to have a big MOT bill come March 1 now I've said that? :o:D)

Why do you want an E46 if you're more after comfort than a ''drivers car'' ?

Also define comfort for you:

Size?
Toys (airconned & heated massage seats or whatever) ?
Lazy Driving ( big engine & auto) ?
Ride quality ?
Posh (interior) look and ''quality feel'' ?

Which pretty much proves my point doesnt it - you've only done 9k miles yet still you've had to shell out £500 and the E36 isnt even that complex and thats with you avoiding jobs like sorting rust etc.

Is it just me or has twoblacklines wanted to buy about 50 different cars in the past 2 weeks? OK I'm no stranger to deliberation, but at least mine follows some logic and has been kept to one thread.

twoblacklines - DannyW will sell you a mint 528i for £4k

I made that point last week and he laid into me for being the same as him and not buying an M5 yet or something. When he first joined he was looking at ordering a Range Rover Sport or an Autovogue 335i M Sport for £30-£45k, and he went bonkers when people suggested perhaps he'd never do it..

£500 over 9k miles is not bad though is it? and a fair chunk of that was toward a routing service & change of brake pads - costs that any car will generate.

Given its age, I certainly could have been presented with a much bigger outlay over the time I've had it, I guess I have been fortunate thus far.

Its not cost me anywhere near your figure of "£1k over 6 months", so I don't see how it proves your point.

As always you missed what I was saying. Most older e46's will have a list of pending tasks which the new purchaser will get lumbered with. It probably wont be fresh from a service, is more likely than not to have at least 3 brands of random tyres, might need a bit of suspension work etc.

i dont see how picking up a 1400 quid e36 and just leaving the rust etc is relevent as you prob wouldnt want to do that on a 4k car.
