Before you start thinking, 'OMG you were deaf and know you can hear!!!111!!!' No i've had perfect hearing all my life. What i mean is that i never really searched for music outside the mainstream.

I started broadening my horizons by using Pandora, but then i took the plunge and signed up to e-music - no more DRM infected files or low bit rates you get from i-Tunes. Within 5 minutes i had found 20 albums i really liked from artists i didn't even know existed. Such a good site, like Pandora it lists bands similar to the ones you're viewing. (I'm not trying to advertise the site btw)

All of a sudden i have loads and loads of new music i can listen to. It's like when I first discovered Napster, but better.

I have been living in the musical equivalent of a cave for years.

Anyone else suddenly realised this?

I was a late bloomer, when I was 8-10 all my friends were into music, but it didn't appeal to me at all, I preferred playing games etc.

But when I turned 11, everything changed. 8 years on and music is one of the biggest parts of my life, without it I cannot function for long.

Although i have a large music collection, i listen to it everyday for most of the day. I have got completely bored it. So glad i've found all this new music, couldnt get throught the day without it.

Never heard of Pandora but to slightly broaden my horizons i usually go on that competitor and search for the bands i like and at the bottom it says "people who like this bad also like blah"..

I really should try out this Pandora thing. :D

Pandora lets you have new music in small amounts - I'm actually annouyed with myself that i didnt try out e-music earlier.

iTunes. DRM yes, low quality NO. In fact the Porcupine Tree song I bought was identical to a lossless CD rip version. (I went on to buy the album)

Its not that easy to tell the difference between 128k and 192k, however it does make a difference when you turn the volume up. Obviously if you have really good speakers/headphones it is noticeable.

I`m a big pandora user (then itunes to download what i like). When i was younger i was in to more mainstream music and used to make jokes about my friends who like greenday..etc. When i got to 16 i got in to metal, rock and alternative. I still laugh at people who like greenday now (nearly 21), but now its because they are sell-outs and pump out bad music to kids who think they should like it :D [dont mean to start a flame war, just have never liked any green day song apart from good riddance]

as said it depends on the speakers/headphones used.

128k mp3s do my nut in. having learnt about quantisation noise and masking i can hear it everywhere..!

damn learning things, ingorance was better and cheaper..

edit:

forgot the bit i meant to say!

Pandora is great. i used it loads while writing my dissertation, free personal radio. type in a band that sound like the stuff your in the mood for and you're away. love it.

Discovering Music....

I would say I have only managed to do that and be enlightened in the last two years or so that being I understand what music is really about, why people do it and not listen to music for the sake of it but for the reason of it.
That said I have been into music since I was about 3 getting your head around it takes a while though. :)

Welcome to the club.

I think it's in your head mate. Hi-Fi gurus have done all sorts of experiments and a DECENT encoded 128kbps sounds very good indeed. AAC is better than MP3 anyway, so a 128kbps AAC is probably more comparable to a 160kbps MP3.

I have not yet reached such an epiphany; for me the reasons behind music hold little importance and in fact there are many songs I adore for which I can't recall many of the lyrics - it's all about the melodies.

As regards the angle taken by the OP, I'd say I am probably going in the other direction now and am experimenting less than I used to. I've never really been one to obsess over 'new' music and now that I have acquired a decent size music collection, I don't actively seek new bands to listen to very often.

I don't think its about any of those things really, I think it just sort of clicks. I am not even sure that I am there or even understand it yet. Why does sound bring great joy...

I just tried that Pandora thing and all i can say is, why haven't i heard of this before!!! Thanks ever so much

something tells me my music collection might get considerably larger over the next few days :D

Pandora's so great that I put in three band names and it didn't recognise any of them :p

I'll stick to last.fm thanks!

Well you have to remember these small group of people are trying to upload every single song ever-released (and not released) it takes time. They also have to cross reference it with other songs - Its a massive task.

I was pretty similar, listening to normal chart music etc (like most of my friends now, still) until when I was 14 I was intorduced to Dark Side of the Moon - and now I've become a fully fledged prog rock freak!

To the OP: are you getting royalties based on referrals to Pandora? :p
