I just bought a Ps3, 360, £2000 computer and a 40" plasma screen with my Uni grant!

:D touched a nerve have i? degrees are a waste of time in this country. every man and his dog has one/can get one. you dont even need a levels to get one anymore ffs

It depends entirely on what you plan to do as a career, a lot of degrees are indeed a total waste of time, but others certainly aren't.

Fail.

You were doing really well and then you go and do a thing like that.. Your as bad as the people who live beyond their means.. :(

yup

went from being £1000 in the black to about £1200 in the red

beer != a good way to deal with personal problems ;)

swiftly got my butt in gear after that hiccup

i knew some people in uni who kept taking out credit card after credit card, just mental!

End qualification helps, nothing wrong with BTEC's and Foundation Degrees.

It certainly does yeah, depending on industry and role but I'd like to think my time at Uni is more about putting the time and effort into learning and developing. Most won't get this time again, make the most of it.

I'd like to think my course (Foundation Degree in Computer Systems Support Lvl5) and my previous course (BTEC National Diploma IT Practitioners) will get me into jobs, I'd like to go into a job after doing the 2 years of this foundation degree and sort of work my way up if possible.

I didn't have a student loan at uni. Why borrow when you can work and live essentially rent free on floors and sofas in reutrn for favours, booze and drugs. I didn't live beyond my means or go into overdraft either I was doing around 30 hours a week in marks, early mornings mainly which ran a car and paid for food, booze, smokes and drugs. It's amazing how far money goes when you're essentially homeless.
I was more interested in who sold the best drugs back then not what the best console was and I think things worked out quite nicely :D

One of my flatmates is a right pothead, stinks the place out with it, am sitting there thrasing my ferarri Enzo about in TDU and then this cloud of smoke comes along and gets me all high... Waste of money weed his thats all he blows his student loan on.

Oh and my loan was lowered this year because my parents should be contributing £250 a year. Hmm, you try telling them that! My mum works two jobs and my dad works from 7.30-5 five and a half days a week.

Someone with no brothers or sisters and their parents earn £200 less than me get a grant, highest loan, etc.

The new, <£60k income assessed system only applies to first years. Awesome. Stupid Government.

It IS a stupid question, the question is completely leading and the answer is totally obvious. For some reason whenever these threads come up it seems that people think they are somehow due kudos and internet cool points for playing the poverty card.
No, it is not a stupid question. Not everyone who buys cars/tv's/whatever with their loans already have their education and materials needed for it paid for.

Because the term is shorter, 'bit of a stupid question really'

My final year undergrad had identical term lengths to my first and second year. Infact actually it was a week longer as I had an exam in the last week of exam week whereas I didnt the year before that.

So no, it wasnt a stupid question, even though I asked it a year ago.

I spent my student loan on a laptop, some Goodyear Eagle F1's and car insurance. It was great.

Do you have a part-time job? Or a parent subsidy? :D

I get a £3000 loan and i dont need it so technically i can spend it on what i wish. I always seem to be broke though cos i didnt take the loan out last year

Well, no, you can't really spend it on what you wish, in the end it comes out of your own money.

When I reach that stage, I would rather take as few loans as possible, so that when the course is finished, I have no debt, and enough money to buy a car/house etc, or a good part towards it.

Don't complain, you're getting stoned for free mate, a rare treat :D
You should make peace with him, share the spliffs, sit and play tdu together.

I spend my loan on my accommodation (halls), i get £75 to spend after, yeah I can afford to leave a term on £75, so I work like mental in the summer to save up money for uni to live!
The rest of people I've lived with in the past all get their accommodation paid for and sent money each month form their parents and full loan, hmmm thats fair!

If a parent can afford to support a child at University then why shouldn't they? I'm sure if i had kids that went to Uni i would do everything i could to help them along the way... though if they bought a PS3, 360 and a HDTV while there methinks i'll request some of my 'help' back.
