I love AMD

Remember the cpu has two cores the second of which was at 29 degrees therefore the difference there is 8 degrees.

No because the motherboard only shows the main core reading.

So you can't say the difference is 8, as you don't know what the motherboard would have said for the second core

Also from your post above you were comparing your original reading of 16 degrees, this is what I was referring to as way off.

Yes but the 16c reading was from the very first time the PC was switched on (no Windows installed).

The 21c reading (much nearer Core Temp) was from when the machine had been on for 3+ hours. That's the reading that should be compared with Core Temp, as they are both from similar circumstances

How many tests does ORTHOS run through?!

It's on this now:

12 minutes 52 seconds

Test 5, 4000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M18874369 using 1024K FFT length.

And you can't say the difference is 3 because you don't know the motherboad is reading from the first core. (in fact it is reading from neither core as its just a temperature probe near to the cpu and not on the cpu itself)

Fair enough.

So take the average 21c to 24c = 3c, 21c to 29c = 8c

8c + 3c = 11c / 2 = 5.5c

5.5c still isn't way off. And that's worse case scenario

could you tell us what your room temperature is AdladUK? To you have a thermomitor handy?

You say you dont have heating on? What does the local weather forcast say the temperature is just now?

It is completly possibly your temperatures are accurate, but at the end of the day, only load temperatures mean anything. :)

Sorry dude I don't have a thermometer

Here is the local weather forcast:

So why 16c was so out the question is beyond me

You are right AdladUK. 16c in Bios is possible, maybe only a few degrees off if your PC is in a cold room like you say it is.

When I did air cooling all those years ago, it was good to have a case temperature less than 10 degrees over ambient. Given that, around 20c in bios temp is possible. Very roughly speaking mind.

Your PC won't be cooler inside than out - Period! But the conditions your PC is in cries out for the CPU to be overclocked. ;)

hehe thanks for backing me up :) And thanks for explaining the situation

I really don't want to overclock. I will eventually. But at the moment this PC is so precious to me that I simply can't bring myself to put it at any unnecessary risk.

That's why I chose AMD over Intel

Uh? Chances are you'd get similar or lower temperatures with a Core 2 chip (they're rated at 65W except the quads at 95/105W, that 6400+ is rated at 125W)

I welcome owners of dual/quad core Intel chips to post their temps. It's strange no one has thus far actually.

My main core is still running stable at 23c/24c (within Windows)

I'd like to know how you avoid typos whilst wearing mittens & shivering ? :D

I'm actually quite warm. There's no central heating on at all.

Weird huh

I can't stand it when a room is all stuffy

My father on the other hand cannot be 2ft away from the fire without complaining about being cold

There is no point in comparing bios or idle temperatures. Speedstep, cooling, TIM, all make a difference, so the differences would be tiny.

Forget idle temperatures full stop! Concentrate on load temperatures with Orthos / Prime95 or Folding at Home.

I honestly had no intention of starting this massive temperature debate.

I agree with you. Idle temp doesn't amount for much. I was just suprised at how low it was (and still am). 21c to 24c for a dual core CPU at 3.2GHz with air cooling is pretty damn impressive

I'm gonna go ahead and say 16C is a believable temp for a 'cold and dark' startup. It obviously won't last for long though for reasons already mentioned, and to claim a 16C idle temp is a bit naive.

AdladUK, it might do you some good to pay more attention to those who are trying to help you. No one here is trying to put a downer on your obvious excitement with you new kit. Most people here are simply trying to allow you to understand the ins and outs of your PC a bit better. Needless to say this is one of the most pointless threads I have ever come across. I would hope all of us have better things to do on a Saturday night than have a lengthy disagreement over a minute error with someone who is obvious (and quite understandably) defensive of their brand new hardware.

That pretty much sums things up perfectly

Well done :D

Your CPU has almost certainly never been below 21c while it's been switched on, let alone 16c!

Core Temp is showing 23c steady now within Windows. That's after 5 hours straight.

I'm pretty damn sure my CPU could have been 21c in the BIOS, and 16-20c the very first time I switched it on

Can you describe this for me, I'm sure everybody makes a different sound whilst eating soap !

Playing an opera song it's like the speakers are under water, or like someone is trying to talk with soap/water in their mouth.

Then on other songs the sound goes all tinny
