I miss manuals.

I miss the detailed manuals with all kind of backstory and details on the units etc.

Many of the manuals became very generic with little info in them. Don't miss them at all.

With basic games these days, and decent enough tutorials, we don't really need them.

Manuals still exist for most games, they are just published seperatly by Prima who charge stupid amounts of money. I got one with a collectors edition and couldnt believe they charge £20 for what used to be bundled in free

If I like a game, I generally pickup the official game guides nowadays.

Normally offer a good read and also make you look more intellectual on the shelf than game cases :)

The black shark one is good.

Spiral bound, 548 pages.

Anyone know of a service where you can submit a PDF online to get it printed and bound and posted to you?

If it is for DCS:- Warthog, the 2 Volume manual should be out soon enough. Approx 670pgs and I'm getting mine for free :)

I always thought Microprose games were especially good for manuals and all sorts of other guff. Falcon 3.0 was a highlight with an excellent manual full of fascinating vehicle recognition charts, technical details and various diagrams of combat manoeuvres to learn. Of course it all rather went out the window when a missile launch warning went off and you just spammed chaff and flares while yanking the joystick in every possible direction at once. :D

Back then there was a sense that the developers/publishers actually put some effort in to the little things. The last proper manual I've seen belonged to Civ 4.

Last time at my parents I had alook through a box of old games ('90s stuff), strangely nearly all the game discs are missing (wonder who I lent them to?) and by far the heaviest is Civ2 collectors, think I picked it on weight alone, included a strategy guide and other bits.

Best/Worst thing about manuals was the old copy protection codes, think a trek game warped you into danger if you entered a wrong code. Steams pdf's don't quite compare.

I kind of see what you're saying, older games did come with massive manuals, I just opened up my Crysis CD Box and it only has 2 sheets in it, a CD key and some Crytek advertising

The good: modern games have tutorial levels where everything is explained on-screen.

The bad: many modern games aren't complex enough to need explaining... lowest common denominator and all that.

Does anyone remember them maps that came with GTA's? I haven't bought a CD version of it since San Andreas so I don't know whether they still come with them.

Falcon 4.0 had 250+ page manual now that was beast!

YES! That was an awesome manual. That I always remember and the manuals for Mech Warrior / Commander games. Used to spend ages just reading up on the various load outs and configs for the mechs. I also love the smell of manuals! Could sniff them for ever. haha.

I miss a decent sized manual :(

All 360 games I have picked up in the last few years come with about 3 pages in english, a controller layout page, a quick page on weapons and a final page for T&C's :(
