I need advice from users who know the history of GPU releases/Nvidia past dodgy sale techniques.

Hello there.
Sorry if this is a bit of a silly question/"we don't have a crystal ball you madman" type question.
I'm more asking as you guys probably know about the history and trend of past graphic cards.

I've recently built a new pc (Minus the GPU) and im now looking to upgrade my 2060 to a .. well, there lies the problem.
My budget is £700.(Read additional for explanation why I can't spend more)

My first instinct was to go for a 4070 super (Maybe a super ti if I got a good sale/deal). However, from what everybody has been saying the 5070 is around the corner (February) so, I decided to wait for this.
However, from what I'm seeing in the past it's been almost impossible to get your hands on a **70 for a good few months and then it's at an often inflated price)
Some say there's a big chance the 5070 will be more like a 5060 due to Nvidia demoting their cards like they (apparently) did with the 3000 and then 4000 series.
I am being inpatient lol

.. is any of the above true or just speculation?

Thank you for any help/advice.

Additional
I'm a carer for a family member and I don't really have any disposable income at the moment. Gaming is my only real 'escape' as I can't really leave the house and only get to go 'out' once a month. However a family member has given me some money to build a new pc. I only have £700 left for the gpu.

I’d probably try and get a 7900XT which go on sale between £550-600 sometimes or like wise the 4070ti super which comes up now and again for around £650.

You could be waiting another 6 months for a 5070 and it may turn out to be no faster than the above models.

+1 to the above... (7900xt or 4070ti super)

7900xt is available now for £629

4070ti super would have some advantages i.e. DLSS and moderately better ray tracing performance (although less vram)

I wouldn't want to go any lower on the Nvidia stack as 12GB VRAM will age poorly (and already is!)

Although as @Armageus said, even a 4070 super would still be a great upgrade if you'd rather not spend the full budget!

And at @TrojanWhore @Armageus. Thank you for the replies. Must admit I was tempted by the 7900 but my monitor is G-sync only and it is a feature I do love otherwise I'd have got that one :(. Thank you though!!

That is what is worrying me. No point waiting 6 months for nothing. Sadly that bit does fall under the crystal ball part of my o.p lol. :(

I had wondered about that possibility...

In that case if you can find an extra £10-£25, then some of the cheaper 4070ti super models are within reach (palit/gainward/cheapest zotac), but I have no idea about the coolers on those

4070 super will still be a very worthwhile upgrade but I think the ti is worth the difference and will probably give 1-2 more years with the latest games before you need to upgrade again (in my opinion anyway, and assuming no drastic changes in technology)

Even if you did buy something like a 4070S you wouldn't lose much on it if you flipped it for a 5070 in 6 months time as the 60 class is rubbish nowadays, gone are the days where the 60ti matched the previous gen 80 so even if you paid around £500 for a 4070S you'd probably still be able to sell it for £400 in 6-12 months time.

Keep in mind that a lot of the stories you will read are from the crypto boom period and that market madness no longer applies.

It is true that CPU/GPU launches tend to have a minimum of stock and when that sells out it takes awhile for the next batch, but that entirely depends on the launch and the demand for the card, so the situation varies.

In regards to the 5070 being a 5060, who knows. I mean.., nvidia released a 4060 Ti that can perform worse than the 3060 Ti, so I wouldn't put anything past them.

Well @flashheart85 it'll be a good time to buy from from this week onwards til Black Friday because their will be lots of sales on and you may even get a 4070TiS for your budget (4070S def the pick though at 500ish for value but the 16GB of the Ti will last you longer for sure).

WOOF! :D

Before you lump it all on a card, what cpu etc do you have?
From the OP, he's built the entire PC already just without the GPU.

I think everyone has sort of nailed it, if there's a good deal on a 4070Ti Super get that. If you didn't have a Gsync monitor then get a 7900XT, failing that a 4070 Super is still a really good card. No bad options here (just bad prices...).

That doesn't mean they have built it with a good cpu though :D

Edit looks like a 7800x3d based on posts in other forums, so fire away with the above recommendations :D

@flashheart85 - just saw your other post about your ROG monitor packing up - Did you manage to get it working again? If not then FYI the monitors that were suggested to you in that thread should support freesync or g-sync!
I did lol I don't know how but a friend took it for a night, worked on it and it worked. He said something had blown in the monitor. I ended up cancelling one I'd purchased and sending it back!

/Waits for some knob to recommend waiting til 5070 launches, which will probably be July/August 2025 :D
Tbh I'm that Knob lol I am so tempted to wait but.. I don't think I will.

I think that sums it up pretty well tbh! The 4070ti super looks like the one for me and like others have said there's a chance the 5070 COULD have a smallish increase etc. I don't think its worth the wait.
