I need advice from users who know the history of GPU releases/Nvidia past dodgy sale techniques.

In relation to Nvidia’s dodgy sales techniques, they are actually very devious with the naming and you need to understand the specs to know what you’re actually buying. Last gen they tried to launch a 4080 12gb for $900 until there was a huge backlash and they cancelled it and instead relaunched it as a 4070ti for $800.

This time they appear to be back again to try a different strategy. Now if the spec rumours are true then what Nvidia is planning to do next gen is sell a 4080 12gb successor like product but with 16gb as the only 80 option at launch, maybe they’ll drop the price to $1000 to make it look like a deal even though in the grand scheme it’ll be an increase on the $900 they originally wanted for the 4080 12gb.

Then they’ll probably launch the real 5080 later on but as 5080ti and increase the price above $1200 on that too.

These shenanigans is why I wouldn’t wait on next gen to buy a card as what you’ll likely be getting for £700 probably won’t be much better than what’s out now for £700 and it may even have less VRAM.

To quote OP, this is also a bit of a crystal ball question lol…
But what’s the ballpark figure that a 4080 Super might go for once the ‘real’ 5080/Super/Ti variant is released down the line?

I’ve usually been one for just running my GPU until it faints, or I cba to sell it based on it’s then value when I upgrade. I have no GPU at the moment, so I’m tempted by the Proart 4080 Super for £950 and move it on in a year/18 months.

Next gen Nvidia GPUs in the price range you are looking at, will not be available until mid 2025 at the earliest. I don’t think even the most ardent Nvidia supporters think Nvidia will release at decent prices without AMD to even remotely keep things in check.

Get a 4070Ti (used if you are OK with that) and use it for at least a year to see where then 5070 Ends up in price/perf.

...from what I'm seeing in the past it's been almost impossible to get your hands on a **70 for a good few months and then it's at an often inflated price)
Some say there's a big chance the 5070 will be more like a 5060 due to Nvidia demoting their cards like they (apparently) did with the 3000 and then 4000 series.
I am being inpatient lol

.. is any of the above true or just speculation?

TLDR: Unless you want a Nvidia Founders card, you won't have trouble getting a 5000 series card on launch day... for a price.

Not being able to get cards for multiple months after release only started with lockdown which then carried over into the crypto boom (and the smaller crypto boom 4 years prior)*. iirc there was only an issue with the 4090 founders edition availability with the 4000 series. RRP 4090 cards from less... 'trendy' manufacturers were available at rrp not long after release. Maybe 9? months later the AI boom kicked in and all 4090s went above rrp.

No one knows if there is enough legs left in the AI (bubble?) for 32GB to make the 5090 an in demand card. However my own opinion is the 16GB 5080 - and below - will be ignored completely by this market segment and will be business as usual.

How quickly the 5000 series cards you are interested in sell out (or not) will be down to price and whether they get 'paper launched' (deliberate low volume). Things people here can't answer for you.

A further question is will you have trouble from bots getting what you want on release day. Traditionally - ie intel chip launches and 1000 GTX series and earlier - up until just before lockdown you stood a good chance getting what you wanted on OCUK during a launch day by hammering the F5 key. But this was before bots existed and scalping practices kicked off.

My own guess is that Nvidia prices will be just too high to attract scalpers this time round. Just look at Playstation 5 pro stock - ie still in stock.

On Name inflation: IMO the 4070 would have been better named 4060ti. It's a small die but had effectively 2 die shrinks over the 3070. My suggestion is to ignore names/die sizes and just look at pure £/performance vs previous generations.

I only have £700 left for the gpu.
My suggestion would be to aim for the current best performance/£ cards and keep the rest of the money in your pocket.
So that's Nvidia 4070/s or 7800xt (or below for AMD).

You have a 2060 already, so you should be fully familiar with both DLSS and FSR. And also dealing with low memory cards. Only you can decide how much value you place on DLS and having spare memory for 'future proofing'. These aspects get argued over so much on forums there clearly isn't a right/wrong answer so you need to decide yourself.

On waiting for a 5070 or 8800xt: We don't know how good FSR4 will be. We don't know if Nvidia will have a new technology trick up their sleeves to maintain a 'feature set' advantage over AMD again. If FSR4 equals DLSS2 and improves their ray tracing, then AMD will have caught up to the 4000 series and you might be glad you waited.

If FSR4 is backwards compatible with the AMD 7000 series and their new cards are priced high, you might not be better off waiting on picking up an AMD card now (if you don't value ray tracing).

*Edit: There was also that time when there was a memory shortage that mostly affected PC ram, but did create a stock problem affecting some GPUs (1070ti era ish) for 3? ish months.

Ti super is the only card I would have considered. 16gb ram and a healthy number of cores and bandwidth.
