I have never used an SSD before, but I've been told you can install your OS onto one and use your normal HDD for everything else to help speed up the start up process and prolong the life of your main HDD. I'm looking at OCZ, but I've been told they're a failing company and won't be around for much longer, so warranty might become an issue in the future. I don't know anything about SSD quality or which company to choose for an SSD which is why I've started this thread. The SSD won't be for my current system, but for my system once I upgrade my, motherboard, CPU, and RAM. I don't know if my current system specifications will help, but I'll list them anyway;

  • ASUS P8H61-M LE/USB3
  • Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz
  • Corsair XMS 3 RAM 4GB
  • Seagate 500GB HDD

most here go for the samsung 840/pro tbh as per speed v performance etc then price etc

i myself just grabbed 2 adata 256gb drives, fast and cheap but most here don't like them, tbh i don't think you can go wrong with any either, just some seem to be a bit faster than others and some like one controller better than others ones, but for me only time will tell.

Intel, Samsung & crucial - check their ranges out for starters.
I've had to RMA an ocz drive before so it's up to you whether you risk it. I'm sure their new gen (vector) will be fine.

I've found one by Kingston. It's called the Kingston HyperX 3k and it is 120GB. Have you ever used Kingston before?

i havent, but know plenty that have, and up to yet none have had any issues with it, then again don;t know any friends who have had any problems with any sdd as yet, got a few m8 with Plextor & Mach and one with OCZ

Kingston 120GB HyperX 3K SSD around about £90?

there's a few here cheaper

They do a 90GB, 120GB, 240GB, and a 480GB version. I think they range from £90 to £400.

for me i'd pick one with the best warranty first, then speed and price second, thats how i picked mine, reading and listening to other peoples views i wouldn't have had any, or only a samsung maybe, but price for me was to high

I've had Intel, Crudial, Sumsung, have had no problems and have been pleased with all of them. I would say get a 120Gb minimum and spend as much as you can afford.

I did look at Intel and Samsung, but Samsung are way too expensive for the amount of storage capacity they offer, and the Intel series don't look as good as the Kingston HyperX 3k. 120GB is the minimum amount of storage capacity I want. Even though it is only for Windows 7, I'd still like the option of putting games onto it as well and 120GB will give me more room to do that. What is the exact size of Windows 7's highest OS?
