I cant stand it anymore, i'm bored out of my brains, I used to love computers now I hate them, i'm 29 and dont fancy another career change but its going to have to happen!

What am I going to do, i've been in IT for 5 years in November at the same place and I cant get a job anywhere else in IT after applying for so many and stupidly turning down one 18 month ago which I should have taken, I have applied for so many jobs now that it just feels like a waste of time everytime I am filling out yet another application form that takes forever to fill in and asks the same questions over and over

I am not willing to study anymore than I already have done, it bores me I really cant stand it, I want out whilst I am 29 but really dont want to go back to college, I just want to work hard and be recognised as a hard worker rather than sit on my arse and be forgotten about as long as everything "works" there really is no appreciation or recognition in this job

The only other experiance I have is customer service and sales but I cant go back to sales either, are there any people that left IT to go into anything else? If so care to share, I am struggling to think of what I want to do its driving me mad, really unhappy :(

Bin men. They get a lot of respect, well paid, and job security. You can go home at the end of the day and know you've done something to make your town nicer.

Are you me? /Total Recall

In the same position as you at the moment, don't take you present employment as a reflection on the IT industry as a whole. I loathe the company I work for, but stay for various reasons however boiling point is close so I'm not far off taking a look around myself.

Don't forget, if you work in support/operations then it's a thankless job. My first boss told me that over a pint on my first day, and it's as true today as it was 10 years ago. If you don't like it, then go for something in development - support is not for you.

Good luck in your search! :)

Join the police.

Couldnt do that for various reasons plus there is a currently a waiting list which is getting bigger and bigger, I know this as my mates brother is on it

I've concidered it believe it or not, they earn more than me

Thanks, yeah I knew it would be but there is no where to progress, I appreciate I am in a better position than some right now before someone decides they fancy moaning about that but end of the day I am not happy and want to change, i've been lied to, i've not had a review for over 3 years yet other depts do and when I question it they say I will get one and I never do, its just a farce

Development I do currently as well as support, i've applied for jobs in development but due to the handyman nature of my role I dont seem to get any interest

Have you thought about teaching?

I'm in the same boat, would love to get out of IT and do something worthwhile like Police/Fireman but I have a family to support (other half and 3 kids) and if I did leave my current job and say joined the Police it would effectively be a 50% pay cut at least which I just can't afford.

Life sucks sometimes! :(

Conversely there are people in a better position than you as well, so why is it not acceptable to want more for yourself? :)

It sounds like you've sat down and weighed up all the things that have ground you down over the last 5 years, if you're at that stage then there's no turning back - it's definitely time for a change.

So have you been a jack-of-all-trades? Support/development/hardware/desktop/server etc..? What do you want to do? If you stayed in IT do you want to continue down the development path, do you want to be a *NIX admin...?

I really dont get on to well with kids and dont you have to go to uni to teach? In an answer to your question, no its never really crossed my mind

Basically I have experiance with one network and myself and my colleague cover all aspects of it including procurement, the only thing we dont get involved with is database admin (thank god) as there is a dedicated guy for that, we support his equipment though. Another blow on my CV, no SQL or database support :( but at the same time thats ok for me as I cant stand it!

I really cant see myself staying in IT, I was thinking community support officer until I saw how much they earn. I cant belive police is my only option, i'd be kind of good at it in some ways as I grew up in a rough area and I know makes and models of cars etc but I have a criminal record unfortunately :(

I know you maybe don't want to consider anything in IT but you should look into SharePoint - there seems to be huge demand for SP skills at the moment and SP consultants are making a clean fortune.

You could maybe do some of the SP2010 MCTS exams which are fairly easy. Check cwjobs.co.uk and look at the SP jobs on there. It isn't support and it isn't development. Then again, it could be very boring.

Currently do this myself but every few weeks I regret not going on with my pilot plans. I guess you have to do what you enjoy. Money is very much secondary.

Criminal record? :p What you been done for?

That kind of thing interests you does it!

Its nothing sinister really, when I was younger I was an idiot and got myself into trouble with driving so its driving related offences, I am curious to know if this will effect getting into the police as the more I think about it the more it seems interesting, I have no mrs, no kids and because I split with my girlfriend last year I currently live at home while I save a deposit for a flat so I am in a fairly good position really

.

Sharepoint! Damn that scares the pants off me, it runs our intranet and makes me cry when I have to do anything with it! I refuse to study at 29, I have tried, I failed simply because it doesnt interest me anymore and I find it tedious and boring

I'm in the same boat, though i'm only 25, i've been in IT since i left Uni and am too bored of it.

I've done, 1st line, 2nd line, 3rd line. Server Builds, some ASP stuff, Networks and nothing has caught my interest.
The last 2 years i've been developing sharepoint pages and web parts which was good at first but now i'm even bored of that.

I think i need to go contracting, 6 months on, 6 months off. Can't be dealing with a perm position.

What certifications do you have? Doesn't matter if they are outdated.

NVq level 3 IT profesional and some City & Guilds stuff. I'm studying for a CompTIA N+ but i've lost interest, there will be no more studying, it doesnt sink in I cant take it onboard I have a total mental block with it

Same boat here. I've been working in IT for 12 years. Got made redundant a year ago but aside from the odd contract, I've not found a permanent role. I want out of the IT industry but I have no idea what to do instead.
Recruitment consultants are no use to me because when they see my previous experience and salary they see £ signs of commission and keep putting me forward for the same IT roles I want out of.
I'd go back to university if I could afford it but the way the system works, I'd lose all of my benefits (I have ms and other medical conditions that make it difficult for me to work anyway). Better to stay being a bum than try to re-train.
