I need out of IT

If you want out badly enough - you will force yourself to begin studying - it's the only way to make a complete career swap.

Fair enough, sounds like to me that the firm you work for has tainted your view on the industry. Anyway, good luck.

When I say studying I mean in IT to better my chances of getting another role, emphasis on "chances" However I not willing to go to Uni, not a chance, I have friends that earn a lot more than I do and they didnt go uni

Thanks, and yes they have but I cant get another job in IT, its not like I havent tried, i've lost count of how many jobs i've applied for and reading that a few people are in the same boat is even more disheartening

Answer me something, what is the point of me studying anything IT related if I want OUT?

Actually - I was saying studying a different subject?

Have you decided on any area of the world you want to work in - instead of IT?

You don't have to go to uni - infact I would say definitely avoid it...
But maybe a college course to get you started in a new field of work.

That post was directed specifically at the person who doesnt seem to be able to take onboard what I am saying, see the irony there!?

I was hoping I might get an idea from other people who have done the same, but as i've already said, what I have learned from the people that have posted isnt good!

Why are you considering taking me on or something?

A comment like that means you really havent caught the jist of this at all

Then I stand corrected.

You obviously are ready and willing to go train in a new industry, crack on and change career.

I refuse to study at 29, I have tried, I failed simply because it doesnt interest me anymore and I find it tedious and boring

I'm studying at 27 if that helps. There are plenty of people at my uni who are in there 40's and 50's.

I think the underlying point is simple, you say study if something you will not consider. But most jobs out there that are likely to interest you are going to require some form of learning / study.

If you are fed up of the support side of IT, the suggestions were have you considered... I appreciate you have tried to get another job, but look at the facts, in these extremely testing times you have 5 years experience but no real technical qualifications. This just puts you to the bottom of the pile. In reality, you are probably very good at what you do, better than a qualification suggests. It's just the principle - Just because I have a MSCE doesn't mean I'm better at loading Windows Server 2003 than you does it? But it does mean I'm trusted as I have a proven record of doing it in theory.
A driving licence means you was deemed safe to drive on the road, but it doesn't mean you can drive ;) but without the card, you're stuffed :)

Have you considered moving more into the Business Development side of IT? It's a little culture change, but you can start working towards that now by taking on jobs now in your current role.

To add, I'm 25 and 3 years into an OU Business degree. Yes it's hard work, I don't wish to be in technical forever myself. I believe one's work life is simply what you make of it.

I used to be into IT and ended up hating it so much I was getting depressed and it was effecting my home life. I gave it all up to start a business with my wife and have never looked back :)

Some people put too much emphasis on money so they can put on a show for the outside world but with me its all about the fact im no longer stressed out and worrying like I was. It was the best decision I have ever made :)

Funny that's one of the options I was considering as well, still in IT of sorts but more focused towards small businesses etc.. Which direction did you go?

I don't work in IT but have been in retail for 13years - And also have the level 3 C&G quallifications within computer support which has gotten me nothing been nuts about computer since i was 7yr. As i'm currently off work due to knee operation. When i go back im going part time for a while then just leaving & going back to college. hopefully study in either photography or electrician course

It's called the job market currently matey, I lost a job a few years ago and ive been on and off ever since due to this damn recession and the like.

You just need to find the right employer, and the job market is heavily county based atm to be honest

just out of curiosity here, to what level are you educated and what roles in IT do you have?

If you did a degree which one did you do?

All makes perfect sense, the feeling is, if I want out, I need to decide what I want to do and study something specifically for that role

When I keep saying I dont want to study I mean IT related courses, I have mentioned I dont really want to go to uni at 29 but if I can get away with going to college then thats different, i'm going to look into it tonight, I also really need a holiday, not been away for two years :(

You will probably laugth but I now do something completely opposite to what I was doing before. My partner has always been involved in childcare or teaching of some sort and wanted to run her own childminding business for years so I became her assistant. I always put my oar in and stopped it being the pig headed git I am sometimes. But in the end I was bringing work home with me and the place started to resemble a pc junkyard and it all came to a head when it got too much. I backed down when I realised my attitude was getting bad and people were constantly on my back after something for free. I then took the descision too can it all and allow my partner her chance to do what she wanted and its pretty good, ok the money isnt amazing but it pays the bills and allows us little things like a holiday here and there and we dont live beyond our means either and more importantly it keeps me off the dole!

I just dont like how I pretty much lost the fun of building computers for personal use. I dont even help family and friends with problems anymore :(
