I need out of IT

I'll do you a swap, I'd kill for an I.T job after being in Sales for as long as I can remember, nothing I.T related on my C.V means I fail unless I start taking courses (which I dont want to do). Fact is I probably know more about computing than all the staff at your local PC world, cant get my foot in the door though :(

If you work in IT there are many things you should have the capability to do. But that would still be in an Office. You could do sales or human resources or marketing or post room or print room or facilities. You always become a labourer and do scaffolding or brick laying.

If you are tired of the technical aspect you could move over to the contract side and manage clients, like a bit of sales but with technical experience so you speak to the clients and find out what they want and then work with the design and implementation guys to find the solutions. Like a contracts manager.

If you need a job in IT and you are in london i get £1500 for a referral with the company i work for, when you complete your 3 month probation. But i don't want 1000s of emails lol :)

Actually I worked in sales before IT, reading the thread properly you would have noticed that. Making the move from sales to IT wasnt easy, I did a 6 month course and spent 3 months in a car dealership which I hated but had days off in the week so I could attend interviews, which makes the guy below a typical assuming troll who thinks he knows someone simply by reading a few words on the internet and then blows it way out of proportion in an attempt to be amusing

Suicide is painless....

In all seriousness, you come off sounding lazy. If you want a complete career change you have to be willingly to study etc in many cases.

I'm the same, longest serving person in support but the lowest paid and the motivation has completely gone. I worked my ass off last year and no one noticed, i'm now doing sod all now and still no one has noticed. I normally enjoy studying but i'm even struggling to do that now, so i've been looking for a new job for about 2 months, had 6-7 interviews but nothing has come up yet. I'm planning on going back to uni to do a masters next September so it's a case of saving as much as pos.

Sounds so similiar, wish I could save for a life at uni but I need a deposit for a flat ASAP plus the fact that I just cant see myself going to uni for reasons previously mentioned

The grass isn't always greener though. Maybe you are shooting too high with expectations. I think you are lucky if you are in a job you love. I'm in IT and I "like" my job. I "like" my job in that it pays me money to do something I have an interest and passion for (computers), but at the end of the day I would rather not have to come to work. Isn't that the same with everyone? I have my bad days and my good days like everyone else and don't expect it to be great. It pays the bills and I don't sit waiting for the clock to strike home time...for me that's a result. What are you expecting? To get out of bed with excitement not being able to stand the wait between now and arriving at work? Not many jobs tick those boxes.

I'm in a similar situation, I work as a sysadmin but the role is now reducing my passion for IT. I'm considering a drastic move into programming, which I have some experience of at uni.

No, but not to sit here on the internet all day waiting for the odd phone call and staring at the clock to the point where sometimes I swear to god it goes backwards. Is it only Tuesday today? It feels like Thursday

Get the point? These points have already been covered, you dont decide you want a change of career because there isnt milk in the canteen fridge

Open university?

I'm doing an Open University course. The materials are very good, so are the tutors (maybe I've been lucky). You get optional lectures around once a month too (at least for the cource I'm doing now) so it's not all from home. Should be free or fairly cheap depending on your income or circumstances and such, can't praise them enough.

Also in similar situation to OP, have been studying evening classes for last year (seperate from OU) and am confident I'll find a new job soon as my results come in. Will have another 2 and a half years of studying but it'll be worth it.

Options?..

1. Start your own business
2. Work your way up in something different
3. Something similar.(few people have said development)
4. Back to studying

I did read your post properly, and I did notice that, I was simply saying I am in the same situation now as you used to be. I wont bother again!

That sounds quite harsh sorry about that, bit stressed at the moment

Postman, not for me
EMT?
Learn a trade, thats why I got into IT
Security guard, very poor money for very grim hours

You seem quite reluctant.

If you actually want out of IT, you need to seriously think about changing things - you might need to work shifts, or for lower pay, or work outside. These decisions don't come easily I'm afraid.

After 8 years of IT I am currently sitting in Thailand for 6 months and do not wish to re-enter IT unless a job can REALLY capture me.

One of the things I would love to be is a Paramedic but hugely difficult job to get in Jersey and huuuuge amounts of study (For not that great of a wage).

I have no idea what I will end up doing to be honest. I would love to work as a developer/creative in a company which nurtures it - Google, Blizzard etc.
