I need some help - PC freezing when playing games

Well my first monitor I plugged straight into the DVI slot from VGA.

I didn't really consider that multi adapters wouldn't work :D

Cheers Beej.

Well the VGA signal is analogue, so you can go from DVI>VGA with some DVI ports, but not the other way around I don't think.

No problem :)

How is the card running so far?

Well, I've given it a few days and all seems well. Played Crysis all the way through with only a few hiccups! But none that caused the pc to freeze up like it was doing.

Crysis crashed once, and I had some very bad FPS issues in the last level, but for the rest of the game it ran like a trooper.

Seems like it was the cards after all :/

Thanks for all the help and advice peeps! Especially Beej!

As an aside.

I run two monitors at the moment, and the card idles at around 50C.

And goes up to 75C when playing games. Is this normal with a dual screen set up?

I also leave the fan on automatic, but is it worth manually pumping it up to a higher speed in order to keep the cards temps low? It wont burn the card out or anything?

No problem. Glad its running well so far :)

Those temperatures are OK. The idle temp is perhaps a little high, is your PC clean?

You could download MSI After burner and do a custom fan profile if you wish, not necessary but will help if you're worried. Is the card loud?

Well the Catalyst software allows you to profile games anyway, its really good!

My pc is super clean, I even took the liberty whilst putting my graphics card in to do another clean, but there wasn't anything to clean really.

I currently have 54C with the fan up to 80% speed. The thing is, the fan sits around 40% speed when I play games, and seems happy to let the temp be as high as 75C.

Well GPUs tend to be able to take higher temperatures.

If you wanted you could set a custom fan profile to set the fan speed higher at a certain temperature. I don't know if you can do this in the Catalyst software? [I've not used it]

Also, a front intake fan on your case may help a bit, from what I can see you only have one at the back?

Yeah, I do only have one at the back.

And yeah, you can set the profile to anything really. Good bit of software.

I used to play with the side off the pc, and with a normal desk fan blowing inside when playing games.

That worth while?

Also beej what do you make of this monitor? I'm trying to convince someone to buy it for me, seems like a steal at this price (with the VAT back).

Nah I wouldn't, any idea what case it is? A couple of cheap 120mm fans at the front [if they fit] would help you there.

That monitor looks great for the price and I've heard 120Hz monitors are very smooth and great for gaming! :D

There's just no space left anywhere really in this pc :/

I tried a while back to fit a new fan in and I couldn't manage to find a spot to fit it in.

50C is ok when playing games with the fan at 80% speed though right?

I wouldn't say it was overbearingly loud or anything. Might try and find a happy medium! :D

Ta for the help again Beej.

Should I get the monitor or not.... decisions decisions! :D

Well, its a samsung Syncmaster 2043.

1680X1050 resolution.

I have been happy with it, but its starting to show very faint flickering lines on the sides of the monitor in some games. You have to really look to notice them.

I thought it may have been the card, but it turns out its the screen. Doesn't have them when i tried to play games on another monitor, and that deal yesterday looked ace.

Well, I know I'm gonna need a new monitor soon.

Thing is, my current monitor only has VGA, and even with a DVI converter it just doesn't like it.

I hook my lesser monitor (older but has DVI) and none of the flickering occurs.

I am tempted by the BENQ one, just gonna mull it over. I cant believe I missed out on the Samsung :(
