I need to improve upload speed

My company doesn't have access to SDSL and is not in a LLU area. We have two broadband connections through two ISPs at the moment, but I've been tasked with improving upload speed. I suspect the only practical options would be leased line or bonded ADSL. We currently see about 300-400kbps on a normal day, but we would like 1Mbps, or more.

Would anyone be able to recommend any ISP for either technologies?

Many thanks in advance.

Do you know what kind of connections you have at the moment? 300-400kbps sounds like bog standard ADSL Max speeds. ADSL Max Premium will give you up to 832kbps upload per line and should be available from pretty much every exchange through any ISP.

Do you know if your exchange has or is due to get FFTC or 21CN? I can't remember what the headline upload on FFTC is but 21CN should give you up to 1.1Mbps or 3.3Mbps with Annex M.

Hi, we have two ADSL Max lines (not bonded), but I didn't think ADSL could ever be guaranteed to give near maximum speed? Samknows shows that FFTC, nor 21CN is available at our exchange.

Even though my boss has asked to look into 1Mbps, I'd imagine as we occasionally have to shift 2 or 3GB files, we would need more.

Generally the upload side of ADSL is less susceptible to line problems than the download side so you tend to get nearer to the upload limit than the download one.

Who are your current lines with?
Have you checked Samknows.com to see what's available? What does it say about FTTC or 21CN availability?

How often do you need to move big files? Unless you can get some serious upload improvement a DVD in the post might actually be a viable solution.

A DVD might be what we end up doing. The problem is: according to Samknows, our exchange only has ADSL and ADSL Max available.

So it would seem bonded ADSL Max or Leased Line are my only current practical options beyond Postman Pat.

Has anyone got experience with Bonded ADSL? Or 'inexpensive' Leased Line?

Get ADSL max premium (usually disguised as the "Office" option from ISP's). I'm at the end of a 5KM long 50dB downstream attenuation line and still get the full 832 up. It's usually only £5-£10 more than a normal line.
Ideally, get two ADSL max premium lines and bond them.

Leased lines are absurdly priced, think in the region of £4000 annually for a 2Mb connection.

Can you post the connection statistics from your router? Particularly, the attenuation, Signal to Noise Margin (or "SNRM" .. or similar), and its reported connection speed.

Could you possibly upload things overnight? Or, if infrequent, could you possibly ever post things? Never underestimate the bandwidth of a postman carrying a few DVDs in their bag ;)

I'd give up on trying to get decent upload speed out of ADSL. We tried a bonded service with 4 ADSL lines and a very expensive cisco router but it just didn't cut it. Sure it was better, but we only ever saw 3MB upload at most, and it was very variable - some days we would achieve closer to 1MB.

We bit the bullet and went for a 100MB leased line which wasn't actually that much more expensive. We are in east london though which I know is one of the cheapest places to get connectivity, and it's not strictly a leased line but an ethernet circuit. The difference in speed is night and day. Cheapest provider we could find were stratogen - product page is here leased line.

Here you go!

If your on a WBC/21CN enabled exchange you should see upto 1.3mbit upload on ADSL Max/ADSL2 - 0.8-1.1Mbit more likely, but from my experience even syncing at ~1200kbit speeds don't really exceed 85KB/s (0.67Mbit/s) at best prolly due to the profile used.

EDIT: You may only see 832Kbit max on some exchanges due to the equipment used.

Thanks for the replies guys; my hope was that I could hear from some people who have used bonded ADSL or similar, and what it might be like, or could recommend any suppliers.

Cheers
