Hi all,

One day an electrician came over and did something to the electrics in the house when my PC was plugged in and turned on without being connected to a surge protected plug hub.

Anyway, after this happened my PC doesn't turn on any more when I hit the power button. I have to unplug the ATX cable and when I do so I see a little electrical discharge occur for a brief second.

when I plug the ATX cable back in to the motherboard it turns on. I have to do this EVERY time the PC is shut down.

Can someone tell me what this is? Has my PSU screwed up or the motherboard.

The problem I have now is when I play a game it runs for about 30 mins and then the computer just shut downs without warning.

What's wrong and how can I diagnose it?

Thanks

Hmm Is there any software that can keep event logs of exactly what's going on when the computer shuts down like that?

I want to know why/what's happening when the PSU just powers off

Anyone?

have a look at event viewer in windows i think there is info in the log files.

in "search" box type event viewer

Right my PC shut down unexpectedly again whilst playing Battlefield.

I went into the BIOS and went to Hardware Monitor and my CPU was at 100 degrees Celsius!!

This is bad right?

My CPU is Athlon II 435 Tri-Core AM3 socket....stock cooling

Fan is spinning as I have taken the case off. My specs?

8GB Crucial DDR3 RAM

MSI 770-C45 Motherboard (AM3 socket)

OCZ 600Watt PSU (suspected faulty due to Power spike)

Athlon II 435 X3 CPU Running at stock NO overclocks (2.9Ghz)

Ok?

i would reseat the heatsink and make sure its flush with the cpu and fitted correctly.
check the bios for the cpu voltage and make sure its not to high.

This computer has not been changed in years and it's ran fine until recently.

What is too high a voltage?

Everything is running at stock and default (optimized defaults) so I can't imagine CPU voltage being an issue but what should I look for?

Maybe I should clean the heatsink of dust?

i believe it does work, if you did try it check the temps and keep an eye on them.
also only use it as a temporary solution and buy some thermal paste.

OMG wow, I was only joking but if it does work I'll give it a shot! Thanks!

I downloaded a program called CoreTemp and it's been logging and keeping an active monitor.

When running Battlefield the CPU temp has been steadily increasing by about 10 degrees celcius every 10 minutes!

Hey, I gave it a clean. I didn't use any paste in the end. The average temps at idle have gone down by about 10 degrees.

I haven't tested it under loads. I might buy a new cooler. Maybe even water cooling. Do you know much about it?

Get some thermal paste or you'll just be damaging your CPU mate. The reason it shuts down is to prevent damage to your CPU. So if it's shutting down, it's doing it for a good reason.

Since I reseated the heatsink and cleaned all the dust out of it, my idle temps are a comfortable 22 celsius and load temps are about 49. I don't think it's that important getting the paste but I will anyway seeing as it costs next to nothing.
