I think next game, I will just stick with the one GPU

Well, SLI 580s with no gaps are bound to be high temps I'm afraid.

If you're not going watercooling or replacing the stock cooler with an aftermarket, your only option with SLI is to ensure that your case airflow is sufficient and buy a dedicated case fan blowing on the top GPU. Even with the the stock 580 closed case, it should improve the temps.

I'd also recommend a complete OS and dirver reinstall to ensure that any driver issues are addressed.

What's your CPU temps?

Well there defo is a performance decrease, and if i could find a way that didn,t involve taking my cards apart to keep them cool i would obviously use them. However i am finding it not to bad and i can still run my games at max detail and enjoy them i have learned my lessom regarding sli though : )

EDIT: Due to me noticing quite a big dip in performance, doesn't exactly make 1080p 580 SLI overkill :/

What do you have your CPU clocked at? And, what CPU do you have?

If you say an i7 920 at stock...

A single GTX580 is good enough for all games at 1080p at maximum settings easily. Unless you seriously think that 40 FPS feels so sluggish it's unplayable, which would mean 60FPS would probably also feel rubbish.

Just a thought, If you want to keep the SLI maybe you could buy a new case, one of the 90 degree silverstone mount cases. That would ensure that the cards are venting the hot air straight upwards with no interuptions: beacuse hot air rises the first card would not be passing heat straight to the second.

I was going to suggest the above with a new case. Personally, I would change the board or the case and keep the 580's for me a 30fps drop like that from 70 to 40 does justify keeping them both lol.

Personal preference though.

Why on earth are people saying 580gtx sli is overkill, as he's shown with a SINGLE game, there can be a huge difference at any res.

100fps in ONE GAME or even a few games doesn't mean completely playable in everything ever.

THeres more than one game now that won't be silky smooth with max settings on a singel card, and I'd expect there will be 3-4 games out this year, minimum, which will run noticeably better on sli vs non sli.

yes, MORE games run poorly at higher settings, but that doesn't really matter, I'm happy with the one card at the moment, I had 2x5850 before but wasn't loving the heat/noise but thats largely because my room is horrifically hot in summer and less heat and noise is appealing.

Anyway, for years I'll generally keep a computer that will only have issues once in a blue moon performance wise, had I loved Metro 2033 I would have gone to 5850 xfire sooner, but it was "meh" and in no way important.

if it was a game I intended to play several times(single player) or an MMO I intended to play several times a week I would get whatever cards were required to play it as I wanted.

Anyway to the OP, best option is to change mobo's to one with better spacing.

You've also got a few options with your current setup, firstly get a couple rubber washers and put them between the cards at the end, theres quite a lot of leeway between how cards sit in the slot, the top one can angle a fee degrees up and the bottom a few degrees down, that would get more air to the top card. Then you can always play around with undervolting your cards, they may run fine with a little less voltage, but only a little less voltage could mean a decent drop in temps and noise.

Maybe underclock a little to get voltage down as much as possible, because 2x700Mhz is obviously still better than 1 x 782Mhz card.

I would "hope" that Rift post launch will get a little more into optimisation and some better drivers from AMD/Nvidia while at the moment they are mostly focusing on bugs and balancing.

Basically anything, any single card or dual card setup is overkill if you don't use it, if you do, its not overkill, its really that simple.

SO guys which case should I buy? I do like the motherboard and don't really want to get rid of that but I will certainly commit to buying a new case : ) THe Silverstone above is one example, any others? Remember, needs to be able to have more then 7 slots to beable to fully fit 2 580s without any problems or at least have the brackets more spaced out!

Thanks guys : )
