I have 2 hifi speakers, one on either side of me when I'm using my PC, and it's brilliant! Doom 3 scared the pants off me. THX PC speakers my arse, they're not a metre high each! Just because they're hi-fi speakers doesn't mean they can't be centred around PC useage as well. Opinions differ, and I hope this little argument has helped the OP to see both sides of the story.
I wouldn't buy a PC setup without a sub. They will probably be very lacking in bass considering their small size. If you have a TFT screen, the hi-fi amp could go underneath it and would be out of your way. Another option for use without a separate amp would be to look into more expensive active monitors (similar to the gigaworks 2.0 speakers but a posher name). There are loads about and they might be more suitable for what you want. There were some M-Audio monitors on sale from OcUK a while ago that were meant to be pretty good.
