Galaxy too big? i think it's just the right size. Yes ok the back in plastic, if you dont like it get a replacement back thats coming out from everywhere, some look seriously nice but im quite happy with the plastic backing, it looks quite nice. The screen is amazing and just a pleasure to look at. The weight some people refer to cheapness but it like having a light phone, doesn't make it a hassle when reading an e-book or doing something for a long period of time while holding it, so its really down to personal preference.
Screen seems to be amazingly scratch resistant and seems quite solid. Now that dont mean go around with it in your pocket with keys though.
Yes there seems to be a bit of a gps problem but mine seems to find them and keep hold of a gps signal once it finds it. Being looked into by samsung and hopefully fixed in the Froyo update that is meant to be released in september so not long till you have froyo on your phone.
Also there is that speed/lag problem that seems to be a software hiccup but samsung and they're looking into that as well and hopefully be fixed officially in the update. BUT you can easily fix the problem if you root your phone by using the one click root and the one click lag fix (which you can find on the xda forums and discussion on the SGS forum here) This seriously improves the lag and makes the phone super quick as can be seen from the Quadrant benchmark scores that come out top of the list after the fix normally around 2000 compared to the out the box 800 ish.
I say go for the SGS, i love mine and thus im bias in recommending it. But at the end of the day you're getting an android phone which are obviously the best =P
