I want to fix this once and for all...

Yer me too thats why i dont think the drive is faulty purely that it doesnt like a setting/update/software on the computer itself which applies itself after booting into normal mode.

Yer i havnt got a floppy drive which is a right bummer.

Something to do with command queing.

I don't know if it would fix the problem, but to disable command queueing you need to disable the SATA controller's AHCI mode in the BIOS. This generally requires a reinstall of Windows, though, or you'll just get a BSOD.

Silly question I know, but are you using genuine versions of Vista on each PC, or are they sharing the same copy?
It's just that I've seen three systems recently with very similar problems. The cause was a bad (counterfeit) copy of Vista. Each person had borrowed and used the same copy (they are neighbours!).

From what I can see quite a few of those error logs show errors when it tries to access/use the service and sometimes driver for network/internet related type things, TCP/IP etc... are you using the built in ethernet ports mate? or separate pci cards? If its locking up when using Windows Update, then maybe its all linked to a problem with the network card/port/driver/services?

Have you tried using 32bit Vista on one of them to see whether it is maybe something 64bit related?

Just a few thoughts!

It shows the CD driver not loading and also "The driver for device \Device\Scsi\JRAID1 detected a port timeout due to prolonged inactivity. All associated busses were reset in an effort to clear the condition".
It could be that nothing is connected to the JMicron sata connectors, so that would explain the last one. It might be worth having a look inside the case to see if any drives are connected to those sata connectors. They should be the bottom two or four as you look at the board, and they are normally a different colour (probably white).
If there is a HD connected this way it could explain the freezes.

I think at this point I would try installing Windows 7RC (I think it's still available to download) and wiping Vista, or at least do a clean Vista installation.
To me it sounds more like a software fault rather than hardware. (But it's always difficult to diagnose without the system in front of you!)

They are both using 3rd party wireless cards.

I had a similar problem recently and it turned out to be the hard drive, the machine would work then would randomly freeze with no bsod. The problem was the drive was failing , sometimes it would pass the checks from the diagnostic util but I kept trying it and evently it found errors on the drive, so maybe your drive is on the way out.

my ide drive supplied the same symtoms, bought a nice green sata drive to replace it.

This may be totally the wrong tack, and please dont be insulted if it seems totally stupid!

I had a similar sounding problem after building a machine for my flatmate, I eventually realised I had put both sticks of RAM in the same channel and the mobo was trying to operate in dual-channel mode. :P

Might be worth a look or it may just be me that makes numpty mistakes like that! ;)

Don't know whether anyone know of anything but i am still having this problem and it is driving me up the wall.

I have got to the point where i absolutely hate Vista 64bit and i would never recomend it to my worst enemy!

On the I7 machine i installed the Windows 7 release candidate and it sorted it out.

But time is up for that now regarding the other machine and i am about to pull my hair out!

It freezes within 3 minutes of loading up the machine now mouse goes, screen goes everything locks up. No error report it ever recorded just an unexpected shutdown. I know it is something to do with the security centre as im sure it freezes when checking for updates automatically. Ive tried turning them off and shutting down but it freezes when it is shutting down.

I just dont know what to do there must be a fix for this somewhere!
