-scotch tape - helps when you make a mistake and to mark out the cut
-good pair of gloves, goggles and respirator
elecrical work:
-solder
-flux
-soldering iron
-"extra hand" tool
-prototype board
-wire strippers
-wire connectors and crimps
-electrostatic wrist strap (if mucking around with sensitive electronics and general motherboard and part handling
General items:
-tape
-double sided sticky foam
-zip ties
-fan, case and hard drive screws
-spare fan and covers
-rubber fan mounts/simmilar
-spare powersuply (for testing)
-safety goggles, electrostatic wrist strap
-some sturdy hand tools (files, coping saw etc.)
-engineers toolkit - come packed with useful tools
-somewhere to put small parts so you don't loose em
-beer
-a good imagination
-practice, patience and spare time
these are the things id most reccommend, not everyone will use them but, depending on what mods you wish to do it will always vary. i am supprised nobody mentioned zip ties for cable managment though...
