I want to play a classic pc game

i still have not forgiven unreal tournament (or quake 3 for that matter) for essentially ending 2 really good single player story based fpsers.. from then on it all became about deathmatch arena shooters.

Yeah but 25 years ago like most of us teen and 20 something back then, you were all in to that new spangled internet gamming craze.

I reckon both of those were done for anyway, Half-Life blew them away. Be thankful Gabe hasn't trodden away from that path, even if no3 might not see you're lifetime.:)

Call of Duty 1 / United Offensive / 2
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Deus Ex
Brothers in Arms
Max Payne 1/2
Star Wars Jedi Outcast 2 (I never played any of the others, but this is actually the 3rd in a series - the others are meant to be pretty good)

i will for ever remember being wowed by the opening scene in that game, it looked incredible (for its time) (the castle flyby)
Same, but the bit that blew me away was the pulsing green fog in the air vent. Before that I'd never seen a game with coloured lighting and those kinds of effects!

On a friend's nVidia Riva TNT2.

Went out and bought my own copy and a new graphics card the next day :D

Shogo Mobile Armour Division, just the for title music if nothing else.

Is that the one where you switch between playing on foot and controlling a giant robot? With a zappy Japanese intro song? If so I played that long ago and completely forgot about it until now.

That is the one. The intro song is just so catchy. I do have a soft spot for this game.

I disagree and I don't have a dog in the fight because I didn't play either at the time. Playing them retrospectively in the past few years Half Life 1 and 2 are the better cinematic experience (which doesn't stand up that well because it's old) but Quake 1 and 2 are simply more fun to play games because they are pure gameplay. And I say this as someone who really liked Half Life 2, didn't like Half Life 1 and gave up on it. I think around this time, there was a move away from pure gameplay to life simulating cinematics

Problem was the tech wasn't really there to do a real update without just ending up with something like Quake 4 which is OK but nothing special, Unreal 2 is a kind of poorer version of Mass Effect, etc. both franchises you really need to go big to do something special with them.

Even though FPS had been around for a mere 5-6 years, they were becoming a bit stale. The old adage of the red or blue key card find was prevalent in just about everything when talking single player first person regardless of whatever theme. I guess you had to be there to realise what a breath of fresh air the original was in a stagnating genre. Placing the game now with the awareness you have of it sitting in the subset genre is blinding, there was nothing like at the time.
