I Want to Play An MMORPG....

Don't really see why you even posted your original comments, the OP quite clearly has experience of MMORPG'S and specifically said he doesn't want to do as you think he will, either you stopped reading his post after the thread title or just plain ignored it, I'm not disagreeing with you just pointing out the complete irrellevance to the OP's thread.

I was merely offering the OP some good advice - you start casual, but you end up obsessed (the majority do anyway), at the end of the day you have to decide if its really worth all the time you put in.

I don't think there are many people who play a mmorpg for an hour a day, those that do are very rare cases.

Lord of the Rings Online is great, I used to play Guild Wars but I find it quite restrictive in comparison.

As has been said Eve might be a good choice, I have been playing for around 4 years on and off and still enjoy resubscribing now and again, try Google for the free 7 day pass.

I'm quite tempted to go back to City of Heroes/Villains when I get a decent connection sorted, miss flying around Atlas...

The problem is, everytime someone posts about any MMORPG you always get all the people who played them to much posting how they quit and would never go back saying that if you play them you are basically a real saddo with no life outside the game. It does get sort of annoying.

It seems people are proud of how they quit their addiction and can't wait to tell everyone at the slightest oppotunity!

I played WoW for along time and had to stop eventually because decent progression in that game does not go together with family life I found. Sure, you can bimble along at your own steady pace and a lot of people are happy with that but you can't make real headway into the PVE side if you do.

I do actually agree with what you were saying how it creeps up on you though :)

Yeh, I don't disagree at all with your comments, I just don't see it has any relevance to this thread when you consider what the OP wrote.

I do understand what your saying too mate I wasn't trying to make fun of people who play mmorpg's or boast about quitting (nothing to boast about really) - I was just genuinely trying to point out to the OP that you can think your just going to play a mmorpg casually but it certainly does creep up on you and before you know it your in a hole. I can't comment on Guild Wars, I don't know how intense that is, I was giving my opinions based on WoW and FFXI really (both grindfests).

oh shut up, I've played mmo's since Asherons Call darktide and I'm married, have a good job, managed to learn another language, have a 2 year old daughter and a healthy social life.

Not everyone locks themselves in a closet role playing elves you know ...

Here we go again

Why is it that people rightly quit when they realise its too much, like myself, come here and explain whats happened or asked for some advise here. Then you get people like yourselves claiming to have the perfect lifestyle, good for you but it wasnt my experience and wasnt his either.

I've been playing MMO games for about 8 years. I won't like and say I have the perfect life, but I can say that an MMO has never got in the way of any social occasion.

They do eat up all of your spare time without you noticing it, though that is not an issue as you would only be watching TV or reading a book etc in that time anyway. But if you let an MMO take over your actual life then you probably have some underlying issues that you should perhaps try and sort out. IMO of course :)

Of the current crop if your just looking to play on a casual basis I'd suggest GW. Of the rest LOTR is quite frankly a clone of WOW, there is roughly 2-3 months worth of gameplay, but once you hit the level cap of 50 there is simply nothing to do, guild I was in of around 50 mature players has dropped to just 7 of us the rest having got bored and moved on. The likes of Eve and Everquest II will probably strike you as too much like WOW in terms of depth and time needed to progress in them.

March 08 will bring the release of Age of Conan http://www.ageofconan.com/wsp/conan/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&template=main and Warhammer Online http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/home/index.php which are both looking promising, but like all good MMO's they will be addictive over time.

I played WOW for just over a year and enjoyed the experience and met some friendly people but when it came to writing a 30k word dissertation for my post grad degree I realised it and WOW did not a happy couple make. :)

The only two out at the moment worth playing are EVE Online and Everquest 2.

Yup. I'm on a EVE break atm and started up EQ2 for another blast.

EVE - Very casual friendly due to the skill trianing system although making cash to buy new ships with can take a bit of time. PvP is fantastic, very involvign at high level but quick to get inot if you jsutwant a bit of piracy.

EQ2 - I played this for about a year at release and prefer it to WoW. New expansion out in november which is a full pack including eq2 and all 4 expansions so a good deal. They've made the lower and mid level area's a lot more solo friendly and they seem to have improved a lot of the game recently.

"I Want to Play An MMORPG.... "

No you don't.... trust me.

Say goodbye to your family, friends and life if you do.

A lot of people who play these games are sensible about it.

There's just no MMO I can be bothered with right now. WOW got dull a while ago. The scene needs something new.

I'm trying Hellgate at the end of the month, not a real MMO but I think this should satisfy me for a while ;)

I've been a player of GW for nearly 2 years now after i gave up my WoW addiction.

It's perfect for me because i'm a casual player and got fed up spending money on subs when i might only play once a week.

The system that GW uses allows new players to quickly create an effective character that can compete against those who have played from the start, none of this tier 3 crap that WoW uses, the only elite items in GW are just their for asthetics and don't give you any better stats than a new player.

For £10 you can't really go wrong, pick up a copy, join the godless and give it a try.

get guild wars, definatly get The first one though, as its the longest, and still the best by far, nightfall was good aswell, but you really should get the propechies first.

Dont bother with factions.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just wanted something to pass time, I know people say; "We won't get addicted" but these sort of games that need a lot of effort time to actually get somewhere do slowly grab you in.

I had been playing WoW for over a year, and the amount of time I spent on that game was really bad. 10+ Hours a day, in holidays, and maybe on weekends was just terrible. And I realised, I stopped playing sold my char as I only had one and moved on. Then 3months later decided to go back, but it just wasn't the same.

Guild Wars, I will definatley try, and I'll get the chapters that one of the poster said to me as I progress.

Cheers all.

Well EVE is just about the only MMO out there that doesn't require you to grind for level/skill enhancement. In fact, you can pretty much get away without grinding at all. Perfectly possible to pvp all day.

I've had a look at EVE and blowing up ships and PVP'ing all day Isn't really my kind of thing. I like story based games with some meaning to them. I'm sure one of my friends tried EVE didn't like it said he got blown up by some mothership.

Eve is like Marmite and Guinness in one. You either love it or hate it and its an aquired taste. I got the feeling its would take up as much if not more time than wow and is heavily social game, not something you can just pop on to anytime with being in a group. Go to -1 on your own your dead.
