I WON on a self service checkout!

He obviously did check his damn change otherwise he wouldnt have done it again. Would have to be a pretty damn thick CCTV analyst to let that slide..
He was probably smiling and giggling to himself as he realised as well. He then went back outside to his caravan and got his wife to do the same thing.

Well luckily, he wouldn't have to answer to a CCTV analyst. I'm well aware he checked his change. So are you. But only because that's what he told us.

Think about it. What will it show. A man walks up to the machine, buy's his goods and collects his change. It will then showing him deciding to pick up a supplementary item, paying for it, taking his change and leaving.

It doesn't matter what his motives were, or whether they are morally questionable. I am challenging the statement that he can be reprimanded using CCTV footage of the event.

You're both missing the point.

It doesn't matter that he did it twice. It doesn't mean a thing. He made a mistake and didn't check his change, twice. That's all he has to say, and they cant use CCTV footage to prove otherwise.

Ignoring the fact it'd never go that far due to amounts I think you'd be surprised. They will be able to see on the CCTV that he has seen the change, it obviously didn't go straight into his pocket. Then he came back with chewing gum and paid with a note despite having change in his pocket. Would they be able to prove it to a criminal level? I don't know if you could prove beyond reasonable doubt but I wouldn't be surprised. To a civil level? I don't see what excuse he could use to get out of the balance of probabilities.

Had a M&S self service checkout gave £15 instead of a £10 cashback. M&S Staff have to authorise cash back on them but they said to keep it as it 'could' be my money and they aren't allowed to touch it if it is! The machine just gave too much! Went and got a mini-statement later on to check and hey presto! Free £5 :)

I have to disagree, I feel it would be easy to dismiss accusations based on CCTV evidence in this case. He could say he glanced at his change but still didn't check it thoroughly enough to notice a mistake. He paid the second time with a note (despite having loose change) because he wanted more loose change.

But you're right. let's face it, it will never get that far, Im certain the OP wont have to worry about a knock on the door in the next few days.

We are Humans, we are greedy, if we see something we can get away with we do it. No big DEAL.

Its only little boyscouts wouldnt do anything like this.

I hate to point this out but if he received double change I recon others for the rest of that machines stock of cash would have as well.
But with the machine being faulty they have no way of telling who got what amounts for sure unless the machine has some internal record of the physical items being dispensed that differs from the the existing customer facing record (IE receipt).

Also I would imagine that they would have a hard time proving that he was aware of it unless he examined his change in full view of the CCTV camera. Also I would imagine the camera will need to be of a high enough resolution to make enough details of the notes and change in his hands to prove positive that he had double or if not more cash in his hands.

Weather is theft or not isn't really what ASDA will care about, its if they can prove it and in a lot of cases its not worth it in the end. I will bet that that machine got hammered all night over the others when more than one person hit the counters.

Meh, I don't know if I would have done what he did. But then again I took Tesco's for a £100 in knifes for about £22 when they messed up the prices of their professional knifes so I'm unsure if I'm really any better.

My first ever legal drink was bought with a £10 note, and I got more than £15 in change. It still makes me happy :)
