I wonder why us shopfloor workers weren't asked.

Not me! On the only NYD I worked it was dead all day - just got sales in sausages, bacon, bread, eggs and other full English breakfast items.

Think HQ said as it’s a Saturday.

It makes no difference as retired, never work and those jammy sods who never work between Xmas Eve to 2nd Jan (give/take a day - depending on when they fall in the week) forget what day of the week it is.

Even in my previous jobs, I had to attend the those days in between Xmas and NYD if the place wasn’t closed and not on days off. For example- this year it would be 29-31 Dec. One place I worked, head office was in Scotland so even had 2nd Jan off even I worked in their Leeds office!!!
Who the **** goes shopping on new years day??

Put it this way, anybody who wants shops to be open on Christmas Day and go sjhopping on New Year's can borrow my uniform.
They probably bought a load of shopping the day before Christmas eve, and went shopping on the days between boxing day and new years eve anyway..

Some people can’t cope with the shops closed! Hence why on Easter Sundays, when larger shops have to close by law, you see queues in the car parks to the likes of Sainsburys Locals, One Stop etc. its the shops that can be open longer than 6 hours on other Sundays that can be open on Easter Sunday. I know Scotland don’t have Sunday trading laws.

I worked on Boxing Day and got customers who came up to us saying that it’s a disgrace that we are open - WTF are you doing in here??? If you are against something which is avoidable, don’t do it!

Basically those customers who want us to open on Boxing Day have never worked in retail!

Whoever decided to write and post that article could do with coming to work for me for a couple of weeks. In 14 years the longest I have ever had off over Christmas is 4 days!

I am in Christmas Eve and boxing day this year. I never got to lay about furloughed on my backside either.

In 30 years the longest I ever had off over Christmas is 2 days. I almost always get 1 day. And I usually work until 2130 Christmas eve. Do I win?

I got furloughed and greatly enjoyed being free for months. It was lovely. Eat when I was hungry, sleep when I was tired, have a life, be free.

I got it twice either way, I didn't ask for it.
A few weeks/months off work might sound tasty but after so long you start getting bored, cabin fever sets in and you want to go back to work but the worst thing was THE PUBS WERE SHUT!!!!

But at least I had things to get on with.

There are a multitude of things to do. If you get bored, the problem is in your head. If you require a job to not be bored you will suffer and die shortly after retirement. Don't bother with a pension plan - you won't live long enough to need one.

Oh IDK, ISTR working NYE, NYD, BD, EF, ES, BH and many other such days, both before and after SWMBO met her DH and we had SNO, DD, DNT, bearing in mind I was also working in a dedicated toy shop (remember those?) at the time... and I have to say it was usually very enjoyable - IIRC, in the lead-up, you were helping to make peoples' special days. In the follow-on, you were helping them find bargains and sort out the mistaken purchases, fixing problems and generally setting the world to rights. SOML!!

Either way, I certainly have worked in retail and it was a ******* doddle for the most part - FYI YMMV, but YOLO, so STFU and GTFO, LOL. GTG, TTYL, TTFN.... JK. IDC. SSDD, so FWIW, SMH and IMO no problem with retail places opening on BD.

Another thing - wish shop workers get a say with Christmas music played at work. Having to endure the same tired awful music for 5-6 weeks is torture. Especially for the essential retail staff who had a tough 20 months. Also customers don’t want it. Even it’s played when the night shift are in. They take in turns putting one of their phones on a streaming app and somehow put phone on the operating button on tannoy mike. As if we use the tannoy, it cuts off the music.

Another decision made by someone high up who never works with Noddy screaming it’s Christmas once an hour.

Seriously get a new job, you are going to be ******* miserable for the rest of your working life if you don't.

Oh lawd, your "tough 20 months" of sitting around doing nothing? What about those who.... you know, actually kept the country running?

As above, get a new job. You're gonna be miserable until you do so you may as well bite the bullet and get on with it.
